Donovan Mitchell: Two Trade Ideas

After shipping out Rudy Gobert to the Minnesota Timberwolves, the Utah Jazz may be pondering a possible Donovan Mitchell trade. The Mitchell – Gobert duo was good enough to consistently make the playoffs, but the Jazz always ran out of steam. The Jazz now have two options – build a new team around Mitchell or jump into a full-blown rebuild. The Gobert trade provided a number of assets, and the Jazz can have an accelerated rebuild should they trade Mitchell.

Donovan Mitchell: Two Trade Ideas

The Big Apple

Utah Jazz receive RJ Barrett, Evan Fournier, two Knicks first-round picks and the Dallas Mavericks’ 2023 first-round pick.

New York Knicks receive Donovan Mitchell.

Barrett is certainly a building piece for the Knicks, but with Jalen Brunson around now, perhaps the Knicks choose to change up the team and compete right now. Brunson and Mitchell are quite familiar with each other after the Mavericks and Jazz playoff series, and could form a very formidable backcourt duo. Mitchell can average over 25 points per game with ease and become a true superstar in New York. He’s also from the state, which may make the Knicks an attractive situation. Brunson, Mitchell, Julius Randle, and others make the Knicks a very solid team.

Utah will gladly bring in a player like Barrett. He’s only 22-years-old and just averaged about 20 points, six boards, and three assists per game. There are a number of inconsistencies to Barrett’s game, but there’s no doubt that he has All-Star potential. Mix in Barrett with the plethora of draft picks the Jazz will receive here and what they already have, and Utah is set for the future. Fournier is in the trade to make the money work. He can clearly contribute now, but the Jazz wouldn’t be in a rush to compete if they make this trade. Perhaps Fournier can be flipped at the trade deadline for more assets.

A Crazy Blockbuster

Miami Heat receive Donovan Mitchell from the Jazz and Russell Westbrook from the Lakers.

Utah Jazz receive Tyler Herro, Duncan Robinson, and two first-round picks and a first-round pick swap from the Heat.

The Los Angeles Lakers receive Kyrie Irving from the Nets.

The Brooklyn Nets receive Kyle Lowry from the Heat and Talen Horton-Tucker and two first-round picks and a first-round pick swap from the Lakers.

Yeah, it gets crazy.

First off, Mitchell heads to South Beach. He’ll be a hit there on a team that is certainly at championship-caliber. His fit is salivating for Heat faithful. In addition, Westbrook heads to Miami as well. There may be controversy there, but there’s no doubt that the Heat culture can make things work. He can help the championship cause plus bringing him in allows the Heat to escape the Lowry contract early.

Utah brings in a promising talent in Herro who they can build around but also a shooter in Robinson. Then, of course, they add more picks to their war chest.

The Lakers walk away with Irving, who’s an excellent complement to LeBron James.

Brooklyn, in the midst of a funk, gives up on Irving and brings in talent in Lowry and Horton-Tucker as well as future assets.
