New York Knicks sign Evan Fournier to Four Year, $78-million deal

After a few days of speculation, the New York Knicks swooped in to steal Fournier from the Boston Celtics. The two sides agreed to the deal in the first hours of Free Agency with his contract beyond what the Celtics were willing to offer. This is a big loss for Boston who traded draft capital to acquire Fournier from Orlando. For the Knicks, this is a great power play where they were able to upgrade their roster without sacrificing its core.

Fournier had an uneven season last year, starting strong for the Magic but hit a major wall when he arrived in Boston. The Frenchman was hit hard by Covid-19 and sat out a couple of weeks before making his debut. His best performance came against the Miami Heat, setting Boston alight from a distance. He posted 30 points, eight assists, three rebounds, and one block on 11-16 shooting and 7-11 from three.

Fournier never quite got back to himself after his bout with Covid-19 and was well below his career averages. He averaged 13 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 3.1 assists on 44.8 percent shooting, 46.3 percent from three, and 71.4 percent from the line. This was his lowest output since his third year in the league.

Over his nine-year career, Fournier has had stops in Denver, Orlando, Boston and now heads to New York. He provides exactly what the Knicks need – shot creation, play-making, and reliable isolation offense. Fournier is a great complementary scorer and secondary playmaker who provides New York with options at the two-guard spot. This is a tremendous signing by the Knicks who promised to make a splash.

And they haven’t disappointed.
