The season is wrapping and NBA trade rumors are back. At the March trade deadline, everyone expected Kyle Lowry to be moved. In the final hours, it seemed as though Lowry would either be traded to the Philadelphia 76ers or the Miami Heat. However, 3 P.M. came around, and no deal happened. Now, Lowry will be a free agent this off-season. This free agency class is not the star-studded class we have seen before. Lowry will be a hot commodity during the summer. Per The Athletic’s Sam Amick, the 76ers are planning to go after Lowry in a possible sign-and-trade deal.

NBA trade rumors were flying early and often with Lowry this season. Even since after the 2019 NBA Championship for the Toronto Raptors, there was speculation that Lowry was on his way out. However, he has remained a vital part of Toronto’s roster. Coming up to the 2021 trade deadline, multiple teams wanted to acquire the veteran PG. The 76ers and the Heat were the main suitors. However, teams like the Los Angeles Lakers and the Los Angeles Clippers were also in discussions. The Clippers were out early, for the remaining teams, there was that one piece that could not be agreed upon. For the Lakers, they did not want to give up Talen Horton-Tucker. In Miami’s case, Tyler Herro was not leaving. Finally, for the 76ers, Tyrese Maxey, plus Matisse Thybulle, and picks was just too much. With the offers on the table, Toronto held onto Lowry.
Going Into the Off-Season
According to Amick, Philadelphia’s interest in Lowry “remains very strong”, but Lowry’s market reportedly “should be quite robust.” The question is, is Philadelphia prepared to get into a bidding war for Lowry? This season is far from over. Depending on what happens during the 2021 playoffs, there may be some teams looking to add another piece. Veteran leadership is priceless, and Lowry has it in spades. The six-time all-star has shown this year that he is still impactful. Lowry is averaging 16.7 points and 7.3 assists per game. If Philadelphia is hungry enough to make a move this off-season, and Masai Ujiri likes what he sees, we might just see Lowry representing another team for the first time since 2012. Toronto will be sad to see him go, but Ujiri will not be offering any bargains. If Philadelphia wants Lowry, they are going to have to sacrifice a lot.
