The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) has been dominated by Iona over the last ten years. The Gaels won four regular-season titles and made five NCAA appearances. The program has seen some great players come through. However, the league has had some excellent players from other schools as well.
Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference 2010s All-Decade Team
Starters
Guard – Justin Robinson, Monmouth
Justin Robinson is the only player in the last decade to win the player of the year twice. He captured the honor in his junior and senior seasons. His 2016 campaign also saw him named an honorable mention to the AP All-American team. Robinson made the MAAC’s first-team three times.
He averaged 15.3 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 3.8 assists per game for his career. He led the league in scoring twice. Robinson finished fourth in conference history in points produced and sixth in offensive rating. He helped Monmouth win two regular-season titles and played in two NITs.
Guard – Scott Machado, Iona
Scott Macahdo was one of the players that ushered in Iona’s decade of dominance. He capped his career with the player of the year award in 2012. The Queens, NY native finished his career as the school and conference’s all-time leader in assists. He had at least 100 assists in each of his four seasons.
Machado averaged 13.4 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 8.8 assists during the two years he played in the decade. In his senior season, he averaged nearly 10 assists per game. He is 17th on the NCAA’s all-time assists list and leads the MAAC in career assist percentage. Machado helped Iona finish as the CIT runner-up in 2011 and make the NCAA Tournament in 2012.
Guard – Billy Baron, Canisius
Billy Baron played two seasons at Canisius after spending time at Virginia and Rhode Island. He made the first-team in both seasons in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference and won player of the year in 2014. Baron also earned AP All-American honors as an honorable mention that season, the fourth player in school history to earn such recognition.
For his Canisius career, he averaged 20.7 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 5.2 assists. He was a sharpshooter from three, finishing fourth in school history in made threes and third in three-point percentage. Baron led the NCAA in points produced as a senior and is first all-time in conference history in offensive rating. He took the Golden Griffins to two CIT appearances.
Guard – Jalen Pickett, Siena
Jalen Pickett is the only current player to make the all-decade team. He just finished up his sophomore season and is already taking the league by storm. He was the unanimous rookie of the year in 2019 and took home player of the year at the end of this past season. Pickett became just the second freshman in MAAC history to be named to the conference’s first-team.
For his career thus far, he has averaged 15.5 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 6.4 assists per game. Pickett has led the conference in win shares in both of his years and is already second on the league’s all-time assist percentage list. He helped Siena capture the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference title this past season and will shatter many records if he does not leave Siena early.
Guard – AJ English, Iona
AJ English played for Iona from 2012-16. The Delaware native was a three-time member of the conference’s first-team. He was a high-level scorer that could pour in buckets if he got hot. He led the league in made threes and assists twice during his career.
English averaged 17.9 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 4.6 assists per game during his career. He finished third in MAAC history in points produced. He also finished seventh in offensive rating and ninth in win shares. English helped the Gales win two titles and play in the postseason all four years, twice in the NCAA Tournament and twice in the NIT.
Bench
Guard – Tyler Nelson, Fairfield
Tyer Nelson rewrote the record books at Fairfield, becoming the Stags’ all-time leading scorer and three-point maker. He also holds the school’s single-season scoring record. Nelson was a two-time member of the MAAC’s first-team.
For his career, he averaged 17.1 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game. He is the conference’s all-time leader in points produced and second in free throw percentage. Nelson is also top five in career points and made threes. He took Fairfield to two CITs.
Guard – George Beamon, Manhattan
George Beamon played for the Jaspers from 2009-14. He was a two-time member of the conference’s first-team. He was also the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference’s tournament most outstanding player in 2014.
Beamon averaged 15.4 points and 5.3 rebounds for his career. He led the league in scoring in 2012 and was on track for a big year in 2012-13 before sustaining a season-ending injury. Beamon is tenth in league history in player efficiency rating and made free throws. He helped take Manhattan to one NCAA Tournament.
Forward – Erik Etherly, Loyola MD
Erik Etherly was a member of the Greyhounds from 2010-13. He transferred to Loyola after one season at Northeastern. He made the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference’s first-team twice in his time at the program.
Etherly averaged 13.4 points and 7.2 rebounds per game during his three seasons in the MAAC. He finished in the top 25 in conference history in offensive and defensive rebounds. He is also 13th in league history in player efficiency rating. Etherly was a key member of Loyola’s NCAA tournament team in 2012.
Forward – David Laury, Iona
David Laury played for Iona from 2012-15 after transferring from the junior college ranks. He was the MAAC player of the year in 2015. During that award-winning season, Laury led the league in seven statistical categories.
For his career, he averaged 15.9 points and 9.4 rebounds per game. He is third in league history in career defensive rebounds, fifth in defensive rebounding percentage, and sixth in rebounds per game. Laury helped Iona win two regular-season titles, make one NCAA Tournament, and two NITs.
Forward – Mike Glover, Iona
Mike Glover is the fourth Iona Gael to make the all-decade team. Like Laury, he was also a JUCO transfer, playing for the Gaels from 2010-12. He made the first-team in both of his seasons in the program. His 62.3 career shooting percentage the best in MAAC history and 20th-best in NCAA history.
Glover averaged 18.4 points and 9.6 rebounds for his career. He led the NCAA in made two-point field goals in 2011 and is the conference’s all-time leader in effective field goal percentage. Glover helped lead Iona to one title and one NCAA appearance.
