Arizona State beat Oregon State 82-76

After a brutal loss to rival Arizona, Arizona State beat Oregon State, impressively, on the road. They seem to have success when they play in Corvallis, having won 3 of the last 4. This was a good win for Arizona State because they beat a team who had won 9 of their last 11 games and was given only a 29 percent chance to pull off the upset. Arizona State played a fantastic game. Remy Martin, Rob Edwards, and Romello White each scored more than ten points. Arizona State needed this win considering next they play a top ten Oregon team on Saturday. At worst, the Sun Devils will get a split on their Oregon road trip.

Game Recap

This was the game when Rob Edwards finally broke out of his season-long slump. Typically he starts, but last night he came off the bench. Potentially, this was the motivating factor in having a big game. He scored 18 points and made four of five from behind the arc. He finally played to expectations. His jumper with 4:56 left in the first half was the start of a 14-3 run by Arizona State to end the half.

Remy Martin had a game-high 24 points and put the game out of reach with a shot to put the Sun Devils up 62-45. Romello White was very efficient making five of his eight shots, finishing with 12 points and hit the dagger shot to put them up 76-67 with about a minute left. The Sun Devils played great defense in the first half only allowing 25 points.

Meanwhile, for Oregon State, Tres Tinkle continued his great season scoring 22 points and now has scored in double figures for 80 consecutive games. He was very efficient shooting 8-12 from the field and added 6 rebounds. Tinkle scored 18 of his 22 points in the second half. Guard, Ethan Thompson, also scored 22 points only while making eight of his nine field-goal attempts, including three of four from three. Kylor Kelley had 10 points and four blocks. Kelley is one of the best shot blockers in the country.

The Difference

The Sun Devils played great defense in the first half only allowing 25 points. The Sun Devils shot 50 percent from three compared to 31 percent for the Beavers. Arizona State also had 10 steals compared to 5 steals for Oregon State. Oregon State was outrebounded 38-31, which was surprising, considering the size advantage for Oregon State. Arizona State edged Oregon State in field goal percentage, 48 percent to 46 percent. These advantages helped Arizona State beat Oregon State.

Looking Ahead

The Sun Devils play the 9th ranked Ducks on Saturday in Eugene. The Ducks just came off a thrilling overtime win over Arizona 74-73. Meanwhile, Oregon State plays Arizona on Saturday. The Sun Devils will get at least a split and that is impressive when playing on the road in the Pac-12. This was a big win for Arizona State after two blowout losses to St. Mary’s and Arizona. They could not afford another brutal loss if they hope to make the NCAA tournament.
