Former NBA Commissioner David Stern Suffers Brain Hemorrhage

Former NBA Commissioner David Stern has suffered a brain hemorrhage and is in critical condition. The first one to break this sad news was Shams Charania, a senior lead NBA Insider/Writer/Analyst for both the Athletic and Stadium.

Former NBA Commissioner David Stern Suffers Brain Hemorrhage

David Stern served as NBA Commissioner for 30 years. During his tenure, seven franchises were added to the NBA. This included the Toronto Raptors, the only NBA team based outside of the United States of America.

Stern has continued his role as commissioner emeritus after retiring as NBA Commissioner.

According to Adam Wells of Bleacher Report, Stern suffered a brain hemorrhage at a Manhattan restaurant on December 12. He then was taken to the hospital for emergency surgery, where he has remained.

David Stern Basketball Impact

David Stern has done a lot for international basketball. Most notably, he allowed NBA players to play in the Summer Olympics, which led to the Dream Team in 1992.

Stern played an integral role in growing the game of basketball. According to ESPN, “the league’s annual revenue from its television contract increased 40 times, the average player salary jumped from $250,000 a year in 1984 to more than $5 million, and the value of franchises skyrocketed.”

Stern also played a big role and created the WNBA in 1997. The WNBA currently has twelve teams across the US and also competes at the Summer Olympics.

David Stern Health Update

The NBA released a statement earlier today stating “NBA Commissioner Emeritus David Stern remains in serious condition following emergency surgery to address a sudden brain hemorrhage on Thursday.  He is receiving great care and surrounded by his loved ones.  The Stern family and everyone at the NBA appreciate the incredible outpouring of support. Our thoughts and prayers remain with David and his family.”

Thoughts are with the former NBA Commissioner, his family, and friends at this difficult time.
