NBA Trade Deadline: Minor Deals Round-Up

The NBA trade deadline has come and gone and plenty of minor deals happened to go along with the major trades. Get the scoop on the minor deals you may have missed.
Jameer Nelson

The NBA trade deadline has come and gone and there were plenty of blockbuster deals.

The Cleveland Cavaliers moved on from six players and acquired four.

Cleveland, as part of a three-team, six-player deal, acquired Rodney Hood from the Utah Jazz and George Hill from the Sacramento Kings. In turn, the Cavs sent Iman Shumpert to the Kings and shipped off Jae Crowder and Derrick Rose to the Jazz. Utah did release Rose.

The Cavaliers also sent Isiah Thomas, Channing Frye and their 2018 protected first-round pick to the Los Angeles Lakers for Jordan Clarkson and Larry Nance Jr. Finally, Cleveland sent Dwyane Wade back home to the Miami Heat in exchange for a protected second-round pick in 2020.

The Denver Nuggets traded Emmanuel Mudiay to the New York Knicks as part of a three-team deal. Denver got Devin Harris and a 2018 second round pick and the Dallas Mavericks acquired Doug McDermott from the Knicks.

The biggest steal of the day quite possibly involved the Phoenix Suns. Suns general manager Ryan McDonough acquired Elfrid Payton, a point-guard who has been decent this season for the Orlando Magic but was clearly not a great fit, for only a 2018 second-round pick.

There were several other minor trades of which you may or may not have seen the details. Here is a round-up of those.

NBA Trade Deadline: Minor Deals Round-Up

Jameer Nelson to Detroit: Nelson will reunite with his former head coach, Stan Van Gundy, and play for a Pistons team that is fighting for a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Of course, the Pistons’ biggest trade came before trade deadline day when they acquired Blake Griffin from the Los Angeles Clippers, but this trade helps shore up Detroit’s point guard spot, and Van Gundy and Nelson made the NBA Finals together in Orlando in 2009.

James Ennis to Detroit: Ennis will make for a nice addition to the Pistons’ bench. He can shoot the three ball and defend. The Pistons sent forward Brice Johnson and a 2022 second-round pick to the Memphis Grizzlies in return for Ennis.

Dante Cunningham to Brooklyn: Cunningham reportedly did not want to play for the New Orleans Pelicans anymore. Now, he will get an opportunity with what appears to be an up-and-coming Brooklyn Nets team. Rashad Vaughn will go to New Orleans after just being traded to Brooklyn from Milwaukee in the Tyler Zeller trade.

Noah Vonleh to Chicago: The Bulls’ promising young roster added another young player who has potential. Vonleh, a former top-10 draft pick, did not get to play very much on the Portland Trail Blazers. He should get more of an opportunity in Chicago. Portland received the draft rights to Milovan Rakovic in exchange for Vonleh.

Luke Babbitt to Miami: Babbitt was the second former Miami Heat player to return to his old team on Thursday. Babbitt will give the Heat three-point shooting, an area they have lacked all season. Miami sent Okaro White to the Atlanta Hawks.

Sheldon Mac to Atlanta: For some reason, the Hawks decided to give up a future second-round pick to the Washington Wizards for a player who has not played this season after he tore his Achilles tendon before the season. Great trade for Washington, though!

Bruno Caboclo to Sacramento: Caboclo and the player who the Kings sent to Toronto, Malachi Richardson, were first-round selections in 2014 and 2016, respectively.
