Second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. has been diagnosed with a right oblique strain. He suffered the injury during Tuesday’s 15–3 win over the Baltimore Orioles after legging out a triple off starter Kyle Gibson. The Yankees announced the news Friday morning and, in a corresponding move, recalled infielder Jorbit Vivas from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Prior to tonight’s game, the Yankees made the following roster moves:
•Recalled INF Jorbit Vivas (#90) from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
•Placed INF Jazz Chisholm Jr. on the 10-day injured list (retroactive to 4/30) with a right oblique strain.

— New York Yankees (@Yankees) May 2, 2025

Tough Timing for the Yankees and Jazz Chisholm Jr.

The injury comes at a tough time for Chisholm. After hitting 3 home runs in the team’s first 3 games against the Milwaukee Brewers, his bat has gone awfully silent. The second baseman is 7 for his last 34 and 12 for his last 81, and his 39 strikeouts leads the Yankees. However, things were starting to look up for the former All-Star, as he was lowering his strikeout rate and has raised his OPS to .714, not to mention continuing to play stellar defense alongside shortstop Anthony Volpe. Ideally, this short stint on the injured list will act as a mental reset for the 27 year-old, and hopefully he’ll get back on his feet when he returns in mid-May.

The injury comes at a difficult time for Chisholm. After launching three home runs in the Yankees’ opening series against the Milwaukee Brewers, his bat has gone quiet. He’s just 7-for-34 over his last several games and 12-for-81 overall, with a team-high 39 strikeouts.

That said, there were signs of improvement. Chisholm had been lowering his strikeout rate and raised his OPS to .714. He also continued to shine defensively alongside shortstop Anthony Volpe. Ideally, this stint on the injured list will serve as a mental and physical reset for the 27-year-old, with a hopeful return in mid-May.

Vivas Gets His Shot

In Chisholm’s absence, second base duties will likely fall to Jorbit Vivas—at least in part. Recalled several times last season, Vivas has yet to make his major league debut, but that’s expected to change soon. The 24-year-old was acquired from the Los Angeles Dodgers alongside pitcher Victor Gonzalez in exchange for shortstop Trey Sweeney. Ranked as the Yankees’ 19th-best prospect by MLB Pipeline, Vivas has impressed this season in Triple-A. He’s hitting .319 with an .862 OPS, 17 runs scored, and 15 RBI through 26 games.

While his defense isn’t on par with Chisholm’s, the Yankees are likely to rotate second base duties between Vivas, Oswaldo Cabrera, and Oswald Peraza. This is a prime opportunity for Vivas to prove he can contribute at the major league level, now or in the future.

Main Photo: © Kim Klement Neitzel-Imagn Images

The injury bug has struck the New York Yankees once again.
