He made his debut with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2023 as the #4 prospect in their system. That year, he posted an ERA of 7.74, giving up 2.2 HR/9. Priester was only a little better ERA-wise in 2024 with Pittsburgh, posting 5.04. However, he was traded to the Red Sox at the 2024 trade deadline for their #8 prospect, Nick Yorke. It was a prospect swap, and it was hoped that with Andrew Bailey as the pitching coach, Priester would play to his potential. But due to being in a logjam with the other starters in the rotation, he was immediately put on a bus to Triple-A Worcester. He only played one game in Boston since.

In 2025, he had a 4.22 ERA in spring training, posting an abysmal 13.5 HR/9 in just four appearances. Priester had little time in the majors with the Red Sox. They also acquired the likes of Walker Buehler and Garrett Crochet for their rotation, so the writing was on the wall for this deal. He was traded to Milwaukee to hopefully regain his stock. This trade seems relatively insignificant on a surface level. However, it could be much bigger than that. They didn’t just get a top-10 prospect from Milwaukee, they also got a competitive balance pick after the first round. Most likely, their new prospect, Rodriguez, will be trade bait shortly. However, that doesn’t dismiss the fact that the Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow has been making wise moves this year. So far, he doesn’t show signs of stopping.

Photo Credit: © Kim Klement Neitzel-Imagn Images

The Boston Red Sox have traded RHP Quinn Priester to the Milwaukee Brewers, the team announced Monday.
