Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Jordan Montgomery told reporters<\/a> he will undergo Tommy John Surgery on Tuesday. Montgomery will undergo surgery next week and will miss the entire 2025 season and parts of the 2026 season.<\/p>\n

Diamondbacks Starter to Undergo Tommy John Surgery, Out for 2025 Season<\/h3>\n

Montgomery, who exercised a player option for $22.5 million to return to the Diamondbacks, will undergo Tommy John Surgery next week and miss the entirety of the 2025 season. Montgomery has likely thrown his last pitches for the Diamondbacks, as they have been trying to move<\/a> the pitcher for a majority of this offseason, and his contract ends after this season.<\/p>\n

After a career year in 2023 with the World Series champion Texas Rangers, Montgomery landed a 1-year, $25 million deal with a player option for 2025 with the Diamondbacks. In 2024, Montgomery pitched to a 6.23 ERA in 21 starts, leading to Diamondbacks owner Ken Kendrick to say<\/a> signing Montgomery was a “horrible decision” and “our biggest mistake of the [2024] season.”<\/p>\n

Coming into 2025 spring training, Montgomery wasn’t expected to crack the team’s starting rotation after his poor performance in 2024. While fighting for a spot in the rotation, Montgomery felt he wasn’t recovering well enough, leading him to undergo imaging, which showed UCL damage.<\/p>\n

“I haven\u2019t been recovering very well. The day after the last game, I came back sore and took a day off like I normally do,” said Montgomery<\/a>. “Next day it was still a little achey\u2026felt decent the next day\u2026threw a pretty good bullpen, but something was wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n

Even with Montgomery out for the season, the Diamondbacks will still have one of the better rotations in baseball come opening day. Headlined by Cy Young winners Corbin Burnes<\/a> and Zach Gallen, with a supporting cast of Merrill Kelly, Eduardo Rodriguez, and Brandon Pfaadt, the Diamondbacks have the firepower needed to compete in one of the most competitive divisions in baseball.<\/p>\n
