After being scratched from Friday&#8217;s Cactus League lineup with thumb soreness, Yo\u00e1n Moncada could require time on the injured list. The 29-year-old signed a <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2025\/02\/07\/angels-sign-yoan-moncada\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">one-year, $5 million<\/a> deal with Los Angeles in February after eight years with the White Sox. He was expected to replace <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/r\/rendoan01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Anthony Rendon<\/a>, who recently <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2025\/02\/12\/yoan-moncada-replaces-anthony-rendon-angels\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">underwent hip surgery<\/a>, as the Angels\u2019 everyday third baseman.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moncada has had a troubling history of injuries throughout his career but was hoping to start fresh in Los Angeles. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He has remained relatively healthy throughout Spring Training, hitting .190\/.393\/.381 with one homer over 10 Cactus League contests. However, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/JeffFletcherOCR\/status\/1901332883270434820\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reports that Moncada\u2019s thumb injury is worse than initially expected.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Los Angeles will keep an eye on Moncada, but the plan is to give his thumb time to \u201csettle down\u201d before letting him try to hit. As for his availability for Opening Day, Washington says, \u201cWe\u2019ve just got to wait and see.\u201d The Angels will evaluate Moncada throughout the week and update his return timeline accordingly.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Angels Third Baseman Yo\u00e1n Moncada Suffers Thumb Injury in Spring Training<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moncada&#8217;s potential absence from the Opening Day lineup calls the state of the Angels infield into question. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/r\/rengilu01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Luis Rengifo<\/a>, who made his Cactus League debut on Friday after injuring his hamstring, would likely shift to the hot corner in Moncada&#8217;s absence. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Los Angeles has eased Rengifo into camp slowly after his <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2024\/08\/04\/angels-infielder-suffers-wrist-inflammation\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">wrist surgery last August<\/a>. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Washington believes the 28-year-old utilityman can be ready for Opening Day despite initial concerns about starting on the injured list.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Halos were expecting Rengifo to play second base, but Moncada&#8217;s injury could open a roster spot for his former White Sox teammate, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/a\/anderti01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tim Anderson<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anderson is in camp with the Angels as a non-roster invitee and would be the most likely starter at second. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/n\/newmake01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kevin Newman<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is expected to be the Halos starting shortstop until <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/n\/netoza01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zach Neto<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> returns after having shoulder surgery last November.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite being limited to just 208 games over the past three seasons, Moncada, when healthy, is an elite defender and a reliable middle-of-the-order bat. The 29-year-old switch-hitter suffered a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2024\/04\/13\/white-sox-injuries-depleted-team\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">near season-ending adductor strain<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in April but still hit .275\/.356\/.400 in 12 games.
