He was 97, the last living member of the 1947 Dodgers, and the #1 person in the world I wanted to interview. (He was pretty private.) A school dropout at the age of 12, he made his Major League debut at the age of 16. Brown played shortstop and had a strong arm, but his aim wasn&#8217;t always accurate. Thus, Dodgers manager <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/d\/durocle01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-01-16_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Leo Durocher<\/a> gave Brown his nickname.<\/p>\n<h3>Record-Setter<\/h3>\n<p>Due to men being called away to serve in the military during World War II, Brown became the youngest position player at 16 years and seven months old, to play in a Major League game. \u00a0The young shortstop \u00a0was also the youngest player to hit a home run on \u00a0August 20. 1945 off Pittsburg Pirates pitcher <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/r\/roepr01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-01-16_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Preacher Roe<\/a>. (Ironically, Roe would become <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2024\/04\/17\/erskine-boys-of-summer\/\" target=\"_self\">an integral part<\/a> of the Brooklyn Dodgers, known as &#8220;The Boys of Summer&#8221;). A record that still stands today.He spent eight years in the major leagues, but his tenure was interrupted by his service in World War II.<\/p>\n<p>After completing his military service, Brown rejoined the Dodgers in 1947, but the shortstop position had been commandeered by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/r\/reesepe01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-01-16_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pee Wee Reese<\/a>. As a result, Brown played at first base and right field before being traded to the Philadelphia Phillies in 1951. He finished his career with the Chicago Cubs before retiring in 1953,<\/p>\n<h3>The Number 5<\/h3>\n<p>Brown wore the number in tribute to the New York Yankees <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/d\/dimagjo01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-01-16_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Joe DiMaggio<\/a>. Brown played against his idol and doppelg\u00e4nger in the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2024\/10\/24\/yankees-dodgers-world-series-moments\/\" target=\"_self\">1949 World Series<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>With his death, Tommy &#8220;Buckshot&#8221; Brown severs a link to a historic time in baseball history.
