The Miami Marlins will be without left-hander Braxton Garrett<\/a> for the entire 2025 season, as first reported by Craig Mish of the Miami Herald<\/a>. Garrett underwent a left elbow UCL revision surgery with an internal brace in December, sidelining the 26-year-old and leaving a significant hole in the Marlins’ rotation heading into the new season.<\/p>\n

It’s disappointing news for the Marlins, who have an already thin rotation. The Marlins entered 2024 hoping Garrett would build upon a breakout 2023 season, posting a 127 ERA+ over a career-high 159 2\/3 innings. When right-handers Sandy Alc\u00e1ntara<\/a> and Eury P\u00e9rez<\/a> went down with late-season injuries, Garrett started Game 2 of the National League Wild Card Series against the Philadelphia Phillies.<\/p>\n

Braxton Garrett Faces Year-Long Recovery After UCL Surgery<\/h2>\n

Garrett showed up to spring training with shoulder soreness and began the season on the injured list with a left shoulder impingement<\/a>. During a between-starts bullpen while on a rehab assignment, Garrett experienced “dead arm” in mid-April, delaying his season debut until May 12.<\/p>\n

Instead, Garrett, who underwent Tommy John<\/a> surgery in 2017, was limited to seven starts and 37 innings, compiling a 5.35 ERA and a 1.19 WHIP in 2024. The upside to his short season was his first career shutout on May 24 against the Arizona Diamondbacks. However, he was back on the IL again in June, then suffered a setback in September while rehabbing. The Marlins shut Braxton down for the season as he was diagnosed with an elbow impingement in October.<\/p>\n

Injuries decimated Miami’s starting rotation this past season. Alc\u00e1ntara<\/a>, P\u00e9rez, Garrett, Edward Cabrera<\/a> and Max Meyer<\/a> missed extended time. With four starting pitchers set to return next year, Miami could slowly turn things around in short order. Hopefully, that can complement the offense that has a few long-term pieces<\/a> including Connor Norby<\/a>, Xavier Edwards<\/a> and Kyle Stowers<\/a>.<\/p>\n
