According to USA Today’s Bob Nightingale, one potential option is Brendan Rodgers, a 28-year-old second baseman formerly with the Colorado Rockies. Rodgers became a free agent in November after the Rockies decided not to tender him a contract.

Brendan Rodgers a Possible Fit for Yankees

With Gleyber Torres signing with the Detroit Tigers, the Yankees are in need of an infielder to round out their lineup. Current third baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. could play second before the start of the season, but for now it looks like he’ll occupy the hot corner. With the signing of first baseman Paul Goldschmidt last month, second base is the only position not yet filled.

New York showed interest in both Lux and Arráez, but they appear hesitant to make a deal for the latter. That leaves few options, as Lux is now with the Cincinnati Reds. Rodgers is one of the last everyday second basemen left on the free agency board, with both Kyle Farmer and Thairo Estrada having been signed by his former team in Colorado.

Rodgers’ Fit in New York

Compared to the Yankees’ present options at second, Rodgers would definitely be an upgrade. His fielding is slightly above average, winning a Gold Glove in 2022; but, his arm is on the weaker side, meaning that if he signs, he’ll have to play at second. As for his offensive numbers, they’ve been painfully average, though with a bit of upside. From 2021-2022, he posted a slash line of .274/.326/.434 with 85 extra-base hits and 114 RBI’s over 239 games. Slightly regressing over the past two seasons, he could benefit from a change of scenery, hitting in the back end of a top-heavy Yankee lineup.

Rodgers could be a good fit for the Yankees, who have a need for infield depth. Currently, their infield roster includes players like DJ LeMahieu, Oswaldo Cabrera and Anthony Volpe. However, adding Rodgers could provide some much-needed flexibility.

Possible Cost for Rodgers

According to Spotrac, Rodgers is likely sign ea deal in the range of $55 million over five years. The Yankees, who could certainly afford this deal, may wait a little longer to make an offer, however. They will also likely continue exploring alternative options, such as the aforementioned Arráez.

It’s worth noting that the Yankees have been active in the offseason. New York has made multiple moves to strengthen their pitching staff and outfield. However, their infield remains a work in progress, and signing Rodgers could be a step in the right direction.

Main Photo: © Isaiah J.
