According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today<\/a>, the New York Yankees are reportedly “actively trying to deal” right-hander Marcus Stroman<\/a> as they look to clear his $18 million salary<\/a> from their books. This move signals a possible shift in the Yankees’ offseason strategy, as they aim to manage payroll flexibility while addressing other roster needs. Stroman, a proven starter with notable experience, could attract interest from teams in need of pitching depth. However, his sizeable contract may complicate trade negotiations.<\/p>\n

Yankees Seeking to Move Marcus Stroman’s $18 Million Contract<\/h2>\n

Stroman signed a two-year, $37 million contract<\/a> with the Yankees last offseason that included a conditional player option for 2026. The two-time All-Star appeared in 29 starts (30 games) going 9-10 with a 4.31 ERA and 113 strikeouts in 154 2\/3 innings. It was the highest ERA since 2018 when he posted a career-worst 5.54 ERA as a member of the Toronto Blue Jays.<\/p>\n

Stroman fell out of favor with the Yankees in the postseason, making zero appearances despite being on the roster other than the American League Division Series.<\/p>\n

The Yankees’ eight-year contract<\/a> with Max Fried<\/a> has resulted in one of the deepest starting rotations in baseball, leaving Marcus Stroman as the odd man out. Fried will join Gerrit Cole<\/a>, Carlos Rod\u00f3n<\/a>, Luis Gil<\/a>, Clarke Schmidt<\/a>, and potentially Stroman as well. With six starters on the roster, many of whom are receiving substantial salaries, the situation has created a logjam.<\/p>\n

While trading<\/a> Nestor Cortes<\/a> to the Milwaukee Brewers for Devin Williams<\/a> was a beneficial move, it hasn’t fully alleviated the congestion in the rotation. The Yankees are aware that they won’t be able to attract notable young talent in a trade for Stroman; however, a trade for a veteran on a similar contract could be a viable option. It’s no surprise that the Yankees are looking to offload Stroman, as they still need to address gaps in their roster.<\/p>\n

Throughout his 10-year major league career, Stroman has maintained a 3.72 ERA, pitching for teams including the Toronto Blue Jays, New York Mets, Chicago Cubs, and the Yankees.<\/p>\n
