However, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/h\/hernate01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-12-29_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Teoscar Hern\u00e1ndez<\/a>\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2024\/12\/27\/teoscar-hernandez-dodgers-deal\/\" target=\"_self\">recent re-signing<\/a> with the Dodgers seems to close the door on that possibility this offseason. Arenado, who hails from Southern California, will have to hope the St. Louis Cardinals <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2024\/12\/10\/trade-talks-cardinals-arenado\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">can negotiate a trade<\/a> with a different team from his state if he wants to return home.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Nolan Arenado Not a Trade Fit for Dodgers<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Dodgers were one of six teams on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/a\/arenano01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Arenado\u2019s<\/a> wish list as the Cardinals started shopping him this offseason. His preferred destination is rumored to be the Dodgers. <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2024\/12\/03\/nolan-arenado-likely-to-be-traded\/\" target=\"_self\">He caused speculation<\/a> about it with a cryptic Instagram post with the song \u201cDodger Blue\u201d by Kendrick Lamar. The two teams have had trade conversations around Arenado in the past, most publicly at the 2023 trade deadline.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/5984758\/2024\/12\/10\/dodgers-nolan-arenado-trade-cardinals\/?source=user_shared_article\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Athletic has reported<\/a> that the Dodgers have not considered trading for Arenado this offseason. Dodgers general manager Brandon Gomes publicly committed to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=muncyma01,muncy-002max&amp;search=Max+Muncy&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-12-29_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Max Muncy<\/a> as the team&#8217;s third baseman in 2025 at the Winter Meetings. While Arenado\u2019s agent has said he is willing to switch to first base to make a deal possible, the Dodgers have that spot filled too with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/f\/freemfr01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-12-29_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Freddie Freeman<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Muncy is a much cheaper option at third base than Arenado. The incumbent third baseman stands to earn $24 million over the next two years compared to the $64 million still on Arenado\u2019s contract. Muncy has also been more productive of late.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2024, Muncy had an OPS of .852 compared to Arenado\u2019s .719, although he missed a majority of last season due to injury. He played 79 fewer games than Arenado. With that, Muncy still managed a better WAR at 3.0 to Arenado\u2019s 2.5. Even with the discrepancy in games played, Muncy hit just one fewer home run than Arenado in 2024.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Hern\u00e1ndez Signing Closes the Door<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hern\u00e1ndez\u2019s three-year, $66 million deal with the Dodgers likely puts the organization back ahead of the New York Yankees for top payroll in 2025 for now. While Hern\u00e1ndez and Arenado don\u2019t play the same position, the signing likely extinguishes any rumor of Arenado ending up with the Dodgers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arenado\u2019s best hope was for the Dodgers to lose a high-impact bat and seek to replace it for a 2025 campaign. Even with LA&#8217;s extravagant ways, it\u2019s hard to rationalize trading for an <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2024\/12\/08\/several-hurdles-cardinals-nolan-arenado\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">expensive player<\/a> when there doesn\u2019t seem to be an everyday spot for him defensively or in the lineup, especially with the DH duties going almost exclusively to superstar <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/o\/ohtansh01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-12-29_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Shohei Ohtani<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>What\u2019s Next in the Arenado Sweepstakes<\/strong><\/h3>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Cardinals insider John Denton believes Nolan Arenado partially turned down a trade to the Astros because he\u2019s holding on to hope on going to the Dodgers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNolan Arenado wants to be told no by the Dodgers, that\u2019s his first choice.\u201d <a  href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/YdsEiQ4zvi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pic.twitter.com\/YdsEiQ4zvi<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Dodgers Nation (@DodgersNation) <a  href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DodgersNation\/status\/1869833087376605350?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">December 19, 2024<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arenado has already used his trade veto rights once this offseason, nixing a trade to the Houston Astros. The other five teams on his wish list are the San Diego Padres, Los Angeles Angels, Philadelphia Phillies, Boston Red Sox, and New York Mets.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Teams will have to<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2024\/12\/17\/cardinals-nolan-arenado-trade-prospects\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\"> come up with prospects<\/a> to tempt the Cardinals into trading Arenado. The organization showed it is willing to take on some of the money on Arenado\u2019s deal in <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2024\/12\/18\/cardinals-nolan-arenado-rejects-trade-proposal-astros\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">the declined trade<\/a> to the Astros. The Cardinals were reportedly set to take on $15 million of Arenado\u2019s remaining contract.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cardinals president of baseball operations John Mozeliak told reporters during the Winter Meetings that it still is a possibility that Arenado will return to the club in 2025. The organization is motivated to <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2024\/10\/07\/cardinals-offseason-plans\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">cut costs this offseason<\/a>, though Mozeliak said there are other ways of doing that. The situation sets up a game of chicken. The Cardinals may have to fold some of their expected return or Arenado may have to widen his acceptable trade partner list.
