A combination of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2024\/12\/08\/mets-sign-juan-soto-record-15-year-contract\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Juan Soto blockbuster deal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with the New York Mets and the start of the MLB Winter Meetings in Dallas, Texas, have pushed the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2024\/12\/03\/nolan-arenado-likely-to-be-traded\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">talks forward<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Trade Talks Heating Up For Star Third Baseman<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Cards Front Office \u2018Intends to Try<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cardinals president of baseball operations John Mozeliak offered reporters a scrap on Monday, the first day of the Winter Meetings. According to Katie Woo with the Athletic and Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post Dispatch, he \u201cintends to try\u201d to trade Arenado<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. He doesn\u2019t anticipate a trade during this week\u2019s meetings.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Mozeliak does not anticipate trading Arenado before the end of the winter meetings, but does think his market will begin to come together quickly. At least three teams have inquired about Arenado\u2019s availability, per a league source. <a  href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/STLCards?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">#STLCards<\/a> <a  href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/pGjvWofMTW\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">https:\/\/t.co\/pGjvWofMTW<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Katie Woo (@katiejwoo) <a  href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/katiejwoo\/status\/1866301817581379826?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">December 10, 2024<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both Woo and Goold reported that Arenado hasn\u2019t demanded a trade from Mozeliak, but the executive wants to find a mutually beneficial deal for both teams. This is something of a necessity. Arenado has a no-trade clause and has to approve any deal the Cardinals can make for him.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Conversations Heating Up<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mozeliak told reporters he expects Soto\u2019s signing to help move the needle on the trade market. With the off-season\u2019s biggest fish off the market, now teams that hoped to land him will be searching for a backup splash.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both Woo and Goold reported that the Cardinals have had conversations with several teams, somewhere between three and five. Both insiders also report that the team Soto left, the New York Yankees, is part of those conversations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The status of Houston Astros free agent t<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2024\/12\/05\/astros-alex-bregman-contract-talks\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hird baseman Alex Bregman<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> could be another chip that needs to fall before one is done. However, Mozeliak anticipates a deal to be done before Spring Training.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Both Sides Motivated To Move On<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Cardinals have already cut a significant portion of their payroll this offseason. However, they would like to bring it down even more. Arenado has $64 million left on his deal. The Cardinals will likely have to retain some of that owed money to move the star, especially<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0because he is coming off the worst season of his career.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Cardinals are entering a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2024\/09\/30\/chaim-bloom-baseball-operations\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">different phase<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The organization wants to prioritize developing young talent and getting an extended look at up-and-coming players at<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0the Major League Level. While the front office doesn\u2019t want to call it a rebuild, it\u2019s certainly not the same tune as the last several years of trying to field a World Series team.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arenado has had little postseason experience in his career. He has played in just eight postseason games in 12 seasons between the Cardinals and the Colorado Rockies. He&#8217;s never even reached a League Championship Series. If the Cardinals aren\u2019t poised to make a deep playoff run, he wants to be somewhere else. Mozeliak did tell reporters on Monday that keeping him was a possibility.
