The New York Mets are one of many teams eyeing potential free agents. Mike Puma of The New York Post<\/a> reported on Friday that the Mets are receiving inquiries on third baseman Brett Baty<\/a>. While the Mets aren’t necessarily eager to trade Baty, the interest is understandable given his potential upside. The Mets’ roster landscape will become clearer soon, particularly with Juan Soto<\/a>‘s impending free-agent decision<\/a> on his next team. If Soto signs with the Mets, potentially on a contract exceeding $600 million, it could have a ripple effect on the team’s roster.<\/p>\n

The Mets’ infield situation hinges on Pete Alonso<\/a>‘s free agency decision. If he re-signs, the infield will be largely set, with Mark Vientos<\/a> at third base, Francisco Lindor<\/a> at shortstop, and Alonso at first base. However, if Alonso leaves, it could create an opening at first base. It potentially allows Vientos to shift to first base and leaves third base open for Baty or Ronny Mauricio<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Brett Baty Drawing Interest Ahead of Potential Mets Roster Shifts<\/h2>\n

Baty, 25, is a former top prospect<\/a> who hasn’t yet established a foothold on a big-league job. Baty has posted a 70 OPS+ in 169 games, and Vientos has leapfrogged him on the depth chart. Meanwhile, Baty spent the remainder of the season with Triple-A Syracuse after June 9. His broken finger at the end of August cost him most of the final month of the season. Before the injury, Baty posted an .853 OPS over 230 at-bats with 16 home runs. He got some exposure at second base<\/a> in the minors last season, making 27 starts there.<\/p>\n

As a result, Baty’s future with the Mets is uncertain. While he’s more versatile than he was entering last season, it’s possible he could soon get left out of the Mets’ plans. If Alonso re-signs, the Mets will have a crowded infield, with Vientos, Mauricio, Jeff McNeil<\/a>, and Luisangel Acu\u00f1a<\/a> vying for playing time.<\/p>\n

Trading Baty this offseason would mean selling low. However, if another team makes a compelling offer that David Stearns finds attractive, it’s possible that Baty could be on the move.<\/p>\n
