Jon Morosi also discussed this potential move on MLB Network, noting that Adames is open to transitioning from shortstop to third base. The Phillies have already announced that Trea Turner will remain at shortstop in 2025. It’s worth mentioning that Adames has not played third base in the majors; however, he made 10 appearances at the position in the minors back in 2013, with eight of those being starts. In total, Adames played 76 innings at third base during those 10 games.

While not a major concern, it’s important to consider Adames. The Phillies need to be creative with ideas this offseason, as changes to the roster are necessary.

Willy Adames Possible Fit with Phillies

The Phillies are expected to trade Alec Bohm this offseason. This would open the door for Adames to sign with the Phillies and be their third baseman. Alex Bregman and Nolan Arenado have also been mentioned in connection with the Phillies. However, signing Adames if Bohm is traded seems to be gaining momentum. Adames is older than Bohm but is younger than Bregman. 2025 will be the age-29 season for Adames. Bohm is entering his age-28 season in 2025. Bregman will be in his age-30 season in 2025. While Arenado is an option for the Phillies should try to get Bregman or Adames if possible. The third base market is not good outside Bregman and Adames this offseason. Trading Bohm means the Phillies need to get Bregman or Adames.

Adames’ 2024 Season

In 2024 with the Milwaukee Brewers, Adames had a .251/.331/.462 line with 32 home runs and 112 RBI. Adames had a 119 wRC+ and a .297 BABIP in 2024. Additionally, Adames recorded a career-high 21 stolen bases last season. Last season, Adames had a 25.1% strikeout rate and a 10.8% walk rate; Baseball Savant ranks Adames in the 28th percentile in strikeout rate and the 80th percentile in walk rate for 2024. Adames ranked in the 51st percentile in chase rate last season per Baseball Savant. These numbers are decent but not great for a Phillies team that needs improvement in those areas. Adames brings power which is something the Phillies rely on offensively. That said, Adames would still be a good addition to the lineup.

Defensively Adames had -16 Defensive Runs Saved with 0 Outs Above Average and a 0 Fielding Run Value at shortstop in 2024. Adames moving to third base might be beneficial regardless of who he signs with. While Adames had good defensive numbers in 2022 and 2023, he regressed in 2024. Adames ranked in the 75th percentile in arm strength last season per Baseball Savant. This makes a move to third base as opposed to second base more logical for Adames. Baseball Savant also ranked Adames in the 68th percentile in range last season. Adames has the skills to play well enough defensively at third base. The Phillies should be open to getting creative and signing Adames to play third base.

Main Photo Credits: Mark Hoffman / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images

Bob Nightengale of USA Today reported that the Philadelphia Phillies could be a good fit for infielder Willy Adames in free agency.
