The infielder was named to the Fall Stars Game in the AFL Showcase. He led the league in on-base percentage at .542 over 18 games. The 22-year-old walked 16 times while only striking out 15 times.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Getting on base wasn\u2019t the only way Saggese showed off his ability at the plate. The middle infielder had a .391 batting average, good for third-best in the AFL. He also slugged .594, the fifth highest in the League. Saggese\u2019s OPS was fourth highest this fall at 1.118. The biggest change for Saggese was his mentality going into at-bats.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI think just make a conscious effort of better game planning,&#8221; Saggese said in early November. \u201cMore just kind of thinking along of with the pitcher and what he&#8217;s trying to do. Really realizing just not giving the pitchers too much credit because they&#8217;re trying to throw strikes, they&#8217;re going to miss in the middle of the zone a lot. When they do that&#8217;s when I make my money. When they miss in the middle of the zone wait for that, rather than trying to do too much. So really just that idea. Really just the thought process of it.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the AFL Showcase, Saggese continued to demonstrate patience at the plate. He walked twice and came around to score once.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Impressive End to 2024\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Saggese made his <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2024\/09\/10\/thomas-saggesse-promotion\/\" target=\"_self\">MLB debut in September<\/a>. The infielder went on to play <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2024\/09\/17\/thomas-saggesse-encouraging-start\/\" target=\"_self\">18 games<\/a> with the Cardinals. In those games, he slashed .204\/.250\/.306. While Saggese didn\u2019t have dominant numbers at the plate, he impressed Cardinals management with his defense.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe one thing that stood out was just his defense,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2024\/09\/30\/chaim-bloom-baseball-operations\/\" target=\"_self\">John Mozeliak<\/a>, Cardinals President of Baseball Operations, in a KMOX Radio interview on Sept. 15. \u201cObviously to go in and make your debut at the major league level, there\u2019s probably a lot of nerves and some uncertainty and all of that, but the way he played was really impressive.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Texas Rangers traded Saggese and a package of other prospects like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=roby--000tek&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-11-17_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tekoah Roby<\/a> for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=montgjo01,montgo001jor&amp;search=Jordan+Montgomery&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-11-17_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jordan Montgomery<\/a> at the 2023 trade deadline. The deal helped the Rangers go on to win the World Series, but it also helped restock the Cardinals farm system. The Cardinals have high hopes for Saggese future.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis is a kid that is a winning player,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/managers\/marmool99.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Oliver Marmol<\/a>, the Cardinals manager, in an interview with KMOX on Sept. 15. \u201cThere\u2019s good players and winning players. When this organization has been really good it\u2019s been filled with winning players.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Opportunity for Saggese<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Saggese can play second base, shortstop, or third base. While <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2024\/10\/20\/cardinals-shortstop-rebuild-wynn\/\" target=\"_self\">budding star<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/w\/winnma01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-11-17_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Masyn Winn<\/a> has the shortstop position locked up, he could have opportunities at the other two infield positions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Cardinals are rumored to be <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2024\/11\/08\/nolan-arenado-trade-rumors\/\" target=\"_self\">exploring trades<\/a> for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/a\/arenano01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-11-17_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nolan Arenado<\/a>. If the team moves on from the eight-time All-Star third baseman, Saggese will likely inherit the position. However, even if they don\u2019t move Arenado, Saggese will have a strong chance to win the second base position over the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2024\/10\/23\/nolan-gorman-last-chance-cardinals-2025\/\" target=\"_self\">disappointing<\/a> 2018 first-round draft pick <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/g\/gormano01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-11-17_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nolan Gorman<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Saggese is currently the Cardinals No. 4 prospect. In 2023 he won the Texas League MVP with the Cardinals\u2019 Double-A affiliate in Springfield. With the organization shifting its focus to <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2024\/10\/07\/cardinals-offseason-plans\/\" target=\"_self\">developing young players<\/a>, they are likely to want to get him in the lineup early in 2025.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His opportunity could be as soon as opening day. His performance in the AFL will only help move him closer to securing a spot in the infield for next season.
