Behind a terrific outing from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/colege01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-10-10_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gerrit Cole<\/a> (after some <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2024\/10\/10\/yankees-starters-struggles-felt-more-in-marcus-stromans-absence\/\" target=\"_self\">suspect starting pitching<\/a> to begin the series) and a few clutch hits, the Yankees advanced to the ALCS after beating the Kansas City Royals by a score of 3-1 in Game 4. Torres added on in the fifth inning with an RBI single and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/stantmi03.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-10-10_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Giancarlo Stanton<\/a> added one of his own in the sixth, continuing his clutch performance all series long. But the night really belonged to the Yankees ace.<\/p>\n<p>Cole was in the zone from his first pitch, breezing through five shutout innings before an incident that cleared the benches briefly sparked Kansas City. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/w\/wittbo02.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-10-10_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bobby Witt Jr.<\/a> smacked a two-out single and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/p\/pasquvi01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-10-10_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vinnie Pasquantino<\/a> drove him in with a double. That was all the damage the Royals would do all night. Cole completed the seventh, then turned it over to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/h\/holmecl01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-10-10_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Clay Holmes<\/a>, who retired the side in the eighth, and new closer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=weavelu01,weaver001luk&amp;search=Luke+Weaver&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-10-10_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Luke Weaver<\/a>, who followed suit in the ninth for the save. The Yankees bullpen did not give up an earned run all series.<\/p>\n<p>New York will now await the winner of the other ALDS. The Cleveland Guardians avoided elimination with a 5-4 win over the Detroit Tigers on Thursday afternoon, sending the series back to Cleveland for a decisive Game 5. Meanwhile, the possibility of the first Subway Series since 2000 remains very much alive.
