The gambit might have paid off had Chourio, who robbed leadoff batter <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/martest01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-10-01_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Starling Marte<\/a> of extra bases with a marvelous play to open the inning, not misplayed a ball to left by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/t\/tayloty01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-10-01_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tyrone Taylor<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another flyout to left field left <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/p\/payamjo01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-10-01_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Joel Payamps<\/a> an out away from getting out of the inning unscathed, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/l\/lindofr01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-10-01_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Francisco Lindor<\/a> walked and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/i\/iglesjo01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-10-01_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jose Iglesias<\/a> reached on an RBI single when Payamps wasn\u2019t able to step on the bag for the out at first.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lefty <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/a\/ashbyaa01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-10-01_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Aaron Ashby<\/a> came on in relief of Payamps and failed to retire any of his five batters as the Mets turned a nailbiter into a comfortable cushion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe\u2019ve been good all year in the bullpen,\u201d Murphy said. \u201cWe had a lead in the game and four of our best relievers eligible so we felt pretty good about it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Mets\u2019 outburst provided some breathing room for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/severlu01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-10-01_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Luis Severino<\/a>, who retired his last eight batters while New York\u2019s bullpen didn\u2019t allow a baserunner over the final three innings. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In all, the Brewers\u2019 last 17 batters went down in order.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe big inning really takes the wind out of your sails,\u201d Murphy said. \u201cThey\u2019re disappointed in how this game went. It\u2019s a big blow.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Montas To Start Game 2<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Brewers will look to even the series \u2013 and keep their season alive \u2013 Wednesday night.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis team has responded all year long,\u201d Murphy said. The Dodgers beat the daylights out of us twice and we responded, the Yankees beat the daylights out of us twice and we responded. I think we\u2019ll respond.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/montafr02.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-10-01_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Frankie Montas<\/a> will get the start for Milwaukee. In 11 starts since joining the Brewers from the Cincinnati Reds at the trade deadline, the veteran right-hander has gone 3-3 with a 4.55 ERA. He held the Mets to two runs while striking out six over four innings in his final regular-season start on Sept. 27.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Frelick Fine<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/f\/frelisa01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-10-01_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sal Frelick<\/a>\u2019s hip didn\u2019t seem to be much of an issue in Game 1.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A somewhat surprising addition to the Brewers\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2024\/10\/01\/brewers-wild-card-roster\/\" target=\"_self\">Wild Card roster<\/a> after suffering a bruised hip when he <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2024\/09\/28\/brewers-win-series-opener-mets-sal-frelick-injury\/\" target=\"_self\">crashed into a wall<\/a> last Friday, Frelick was not only in the starting lineup but flashed his speed both in right field and on the base paths, legging out a leadoff double and scoring in the fourth inning.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Chourio Makes History<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His defensive miscue aside, rookie Jackson Chourio made history in Game 1 by becoming the youngest player to collect multiple hits in his first postseason appearance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 20-year-old singled and scored in the first then added an RBI single in the fourth in a 2-for-4 debut.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cJackson was fantastic,\u201d Murphy said. \u201cHe\u2019s a special player.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Notable<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With another Game 1 loss, the Brewers have now lost six consecutive postseason games.
