Hours after nabbing <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/u\/uptonju01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Justin Upton<\/a> <\/strong>from Detroit, the Los Angeles Angels added more depth courtesy of the Atlanta Braves late Thursday night with the acquisition of Phillips, per <strong>Ken Rosenthal<\/strong> of The Athletic.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Brandon Phillips headed to <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Angels?src=hash\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">#Angels<\/a>, source tells The Athletic.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Ken Rosenthal (@Ken_Rosenthal) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Ken_Rosenthal\/status\/903450640399171585\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">September 1, 2017<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<h2>Angels Acquire Brandon Phillips<\/h2>\n<p>Phillips played 25 games at third base as of late with <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/swansda01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dansby Swanson<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=albies000ozh&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ozzie Albies<\/a><\/strong> garnering playing time up the middle, so this move works two-fold. It allows the Braves to get more looks at <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/camarjo01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Johan Camargo<\/a> <\/strong>and<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/r\/ruizri01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rio Ruiz<\/a><\/strong> at the hot corner, while also allowing the veteran to return to second base on a contending team. The Angels currently sit 1.5 games behind the Minnesota Twins for the second Wild Card spot in the American League.<\/p>\n<h3>Dat Dude hasn&#8217;t skipped a beat<\/h3>\n<p>The 36-year-old second baseman is known for bringing a flare and a smile to the ballpark, but in 2017 he brought a bat as well. Seen toward the end of his time in Cincinnati as a liability in the middle of the order, he really hasn\u2019t fallen off much if at all from his production in 2015-16. In 120 games with the Braves, he\u2019s slashing .291\/.329\/.423 (all above his career averages). That goes along with 27 doubles, 11 homers and 10 stolen bags. According to the metrics, his defense at second base took a bit of a step back with -5 DRS in 88 games, but he still has four Gold Gloves on his mantle.<\/p>\n<p>Adding Phillips to a lineup with Upton,\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/t\/troutmi01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mike Trout<\/a><\/strong>, and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/p\/pujolal01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Albert Pujols<\/a><\/strong> signals <strong>Billy Eppler<\/strong> and the Angels are going for it, a rare sight for the club in recent years. Sanchez is a 29-year-old backstop that has seen time in the big leagues with the Pirates between 2013 and 2015, the club which drafted him in the first round in 2009.
