The club&#8217;s depth and talented farm system create several options that can improve the roster and increase their chances of returning to the postseason in 2025.<\/p>\n<h2>Cubs May Be Looking to Add &#8220;Ace&#8221; in Offseason<\/h2>\n<h3>A Good Starting Four in the Rotation<\/h3>\n<p>The Cubs rotation this year featured four pitchers in the regular rotation, led by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/i\/imanash01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-09-28_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Shota Imanaga<\/a> who had a 15-3 record, a 2.91 ERA, a 1.021 WHIP, and 174 strikeouts in 173 1\/3 innings. Imanaga combined with <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2023\/08\/31\/justin-steele-case-cy-young\/\" target=\"_self\">Justin Steele<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/t\/taillja01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-09-28_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jameson Taillon<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2024\/07\/11\/chicago-cubs-roster-injuries-javier-assad\/\" target=\"_self\">Javier Assad<\/a> for 39 wins against 22 losses over 100 starts.<\/p>\n<p>The remaining starts went to <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2024\/02\/02\/kyle-hendricks-cubs-rotation\/\" target=\"_self\">Kyle Hendricks<\/a> (24) and a contingent of young arms that included <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/w\/wicksjo01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-09-28_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jordan Wicks<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/w\/wesneha01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-09-28_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hayden Wesneski<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=brownbe02,brown-015ben,brown-016ben&amp;search=Ben+Brown&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-09-28_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ben Brown<\/a>. Wicks, Wesneski, and Brown will look to win the number five spot in the rotation. There will be talks between Counsell and President of Baseball Operations Jed Hoyer this offseason. These talks could include signing another top-flight starter this fall. That would mean tapping into what should be a rich free-agent market.<\/p>\n<p>Among these are Atlanta Braves lefty <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/f\/friedma01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-09-28_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Max Fried<\/a> (71 wins\/3 Gold Gloves since 2019), Baltimore Orioles ace <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2024\/09\/28\/orioles-corbin-burnes-free-agency\/\" target=\"_self\">Corbin Burnes<\/a> (15-9), San Francisco Giants lefty <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/snellbl01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-09-28_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Blake Snell<\/a> (2-0\/1.03 ERA\/no-hitter since July 9), San Diego Padres lefty <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/scottta01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-09-28_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tanner Scott<\/a> (9-6\/1.75 ERA), and righty <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/f\/flaheja01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-09-28_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jack Flaherty<\/a> (13-7) of the Los Angeles Dodgers.<\/p>\n<p>However, Cubs ownership isn&#8217;t prone to digging deep for pitchers or players of this caliber. Someone like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=sasaki000rok&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-09-28_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Roki Sasaki<\/a>, 23, could bring a quality arm at a bargain price due to MLB rules on international players.<\/p>\n<p>Under that rule, the league caps contracts for players under 25 with less than six years of pitching experience in foreign major leagues. But injuries and inconsistency kept them from joining the Cubs rotation. The longtime Cubs starter Kyle Hendricks made the lion&#8217;s share of starts in the fifth spot. Wicks, 25, would give the rotation another left-hander if he is able to find his form next season.<\/p>\n<p>Barring another setback from injury, the Cubs&#8217; number two prospect <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=horton001cad,horton000cad&amp;search=Cade+Horton&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-09-28_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cade Horton<\/a> will challenge for the spot in the spring of 2025. But most positions are already filled with players who have staked their claim to them, either by contract or by their play on the field.<\/p>\n<p>That means outfielders like Caissie and Alcantara, and infielders like Matt Shaw will find it difficult to get playing time. The Cubs management knows they can&#8217;t keep players around forever, which means a trade is likely for some of these top prospects. This should give the club a chance to land a quality starter.<\/p>\n<p>Dealing top prospects might not land the likes of Burnes or Flaherty, but a veteran like Snell or Fried might well work.
