The <b>Chicago White Sox<\/b> officially announced that bench coach <b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/r\/renteri01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rick Renteria<\/a><\/b> would replace <b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?results=venturo01,ventur005rob&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Robin Ventura<\/a><\/b> as the club&#8217;s manager. The White Sox were prepared to hand Ventura an extension had he desired one; however, on Sunday, Ventura declined, stating that the clubhouse needed a new voice and direction.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Rick Renteria named new White Sox manager. A former infielder, he spent also a portion of his playing career with the club. When hired following the 2011 season, Ventura became the 17th former White Sox player to manage the team.<\/p>\n<p>Under Ventura&#8217;s direction, Chicago failed to make serious strides in an <b>AL Central<\/b> division long dominated by the <b>Detroit Tigers<\/b>, and now the <b>Cleveland Indians<\/b>. This year, the White Sox extended their playoff drought to eight seasons. They finished with a record of 78-84, putting them squarely in fourth place in the division. Only the lowly\u00a0<strong>Minnesota Twins<\/strong> finished below them.<\/p>\n<p>Renteria, 54, last managed a Major League club when he skippered for the <b>Chicago Cubs<\/b> in 2014, his first and only experience as a manager. He led the Cubs to a 73-89 record, and was then replaced by current Cubs manager <b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/maddojo99.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Joe Maddon<\/a><\/b>. Renteria now becomes the White Sox fourth manager since 1998.<\/p>\n<p>White Sox Vice President and General Manager <strong>Rick Hahn<\/strong> said that <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/philgrogers\/status\/782975229845004292\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Renteria would have been a hot managerial commodity this offseason<\/a>, had Chicago not hired him as manager.\u00a0The White Sox haven&#8217;t won a <b>World Series<\/b> since 2005, and haven&#8217;t been to the playoffs since 2008.
