For the first time since winning the 2019 World Series, Washington will not end the year at the bottom of the division. Even though their rebuild is far from over, the Nationals are expected to build on this year\u2019s improvement in free agency.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Thursday, Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo spoke to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlb.com\/nationals\/news\/mike-rizzo-discusses-nationals-young-core-plans-for-2025?msockid=184e5699a32f6029150f4399a260614d\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MLB.com\u2019s Bill Ladson<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about the future of the franchise. One thing Rizzo made clear is that the Nationals \u201cneed some offense\u201d and a middle-of-the-order bat. Washington has had a <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2024\/08\/01\/power-nationals-offense-lineup\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">middle-of-the-pack offense<\/a> ever since they traded <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=sotoju01,soto--004jua&amp;search=Juan+Soto&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-09-20_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Juan Soto<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to San Diego two years ago. The Nationals have their outfield of the future with rookies <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/w\/woodja03.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-09-20_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">James Wood<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=youngja03,young-009jac,young-013jac,young-008jac,young-003jac&amp;search=Jacob+Young&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-09-20_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jacob Young<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/crewsdy01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-09-20_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dylan Crews<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> already <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2024\/08\/30\/nationals-rookies-potential\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">in the majors<\/a>. Shortstop <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/a\/abramcj01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-09-20_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CJ Abrams<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> followed his breakout season by making his first All-Star Game, while second baseman <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/g\/garcilu04.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-09-20_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Luis Garc\u00eda Jr.<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is having his own breakout season. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/r\/ruizke01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-09-20_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Keibert Ruiz<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, acquired in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/scherma01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-09-20_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Max Scherzer<\/a>\/<a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/t\/turnetr01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-09-20_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Trea Turner<\/a> trade, has solidified his spot in the Nationals lineup both at the plate and behind it. But the Nationals lack production from their corner infield, something they plan to change this offseason.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Nationals Plan on Adding Middle-of-the-Order Bats in Free Agency<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While Rizzo did not identify any specific targets, Washington has the payroll flexibility to sign a top free agent bat. Despite not wanting to \u201ckeyhole\u201d the Nationals at first base, that is the most obvious position for an upgrade. Washington\u2019s first basemen have hit just .240\/.310\/.378 this season, landing them in the bottom third of the majors. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/y\/yepezju01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-09-20_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Juan Yepez<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can hit for average at first base but lacks the power that will be available in free agency.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Nationals could spend big on a power-hitting first baseman like <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/a\/alonspe01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-09-20_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pete Alonso<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/w\/walkech02.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-09-20_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Christian Walker<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> this winter. But they still have options even if they are not ready to hand out massive free agent contracts. One option would be reuniting with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=belljo02,belljo01&amp;search=Josh+Bell&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-09-20_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Josh Bell<\/a>,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who slashed .278\/.363\/.483 during his time in Washington. The 32-year-old first baseman owns a .249\/.320\/.401 slash line over 140 games between the Miami Marlins and Arizona Diamondbacks this year. Another interesting option is two-time All-Star <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/t\/turneju01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-09-20_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Justin Turner<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The soon-to-be 40-year-old has primarily been a designated hitter in recent years, but has 119 career starts at first base, including 39 in 2024. Even though Rizzo expects House to be an impact player for the Nationals next year, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/suareeu01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-09-20_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Eugenio Su\u00e1rez<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> could provide the middle-of-the-order presence Washington is looking for. The 33-year-old third baseman has had a dominant second half for Arizona, slashing .312\/.345\/.628\/.973 through 56 games. Su\u00e1rez, batting .254\/.319\/.471 with 28 homers and 97 RBI this season, would give Washington a significant offensive boost. That is, of course, if the Diamondbacks decline his $15 million club option for 2025.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Washington&#8217;s Outlook for 2025<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now that Washington\u2019s rebuild has turned a corner, their goal for 2025 should be achieving their first winning record in five years. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even if they avoid pursuing top-tier free agents like the Kansas City Royals did last offseason, the Nationals need more impact bats in their lineup.
