While nobody expected the Orioles to win 102+ games this season, playing sub-.500 baseball since the All-Star break was not on anyone\u2019s bingo cards either.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Baltimore\u2019s 5-3 loss to the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday marked their ninth loss in 12 games. Something the Orioles have not done since their 110-loss season in 2021. At 84-68, the Orioles are 16 games above .500 for the first time since they were 35-19 on May 29th. Baltimore has scored three or fewer runs in 10 of their past 12 games, plating just 24 total runs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;The mojo that we&#8217;ve had has just drifted away from us the last few months,&#8221; Orioles general manager Mike Elias <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/story\/_\/id\/41309262\/baltimore-orioles-try-snap-funk-playoffs\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">said Tuesday<\/a>. &#8220;There are reasons for it that are obvious, but a lot of it is we&#8217;ve got people here that are experiencing a downturn &#8211; whether it&#8217;s themselves or the team.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Reasons Behind the Orioles&#8217; Late-Season Slump<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the \u201cobvious reasons\u201d Elias referred to are injuries. Baltimore lost three members of their starting rotation to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2024\/06\/19\/orioles-kyle-bradish-tommy-john-surgery\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">season-ending elbow surgery<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the first few months of the season. Starter <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/r\/rodrigr01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grayson Rodriguez<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is also sidelined with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2024\/08\/06\/orioles-starter-scratched-grayson-rodriguez\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a shoulder <\/span>injury<\/a> but<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is expected to return in some capacity before October. Injuries have also plagued Baltimore&#8217;s offense with infielders <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/w\/westbjo01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jordan Westburg<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/mountry01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ryan Mountcastle<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/u\/uriasra01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ram\u00f3n Ur\u00edas<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/mateojo01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jorge Mateo<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also sidelined. Even though Mateo\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2024\/08\/28\/orioles-jorge-mateo-elbow-surgery\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">season is over<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, both Westburg and Ur\u00edas <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2024\/09\/18\/orioles-westburg-urias-rehab-assignment\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">will begin a rehab assignment<\/a> with Triple-A Norfolk on Thursday. Southpaw <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/couloda01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Danny Coulombe<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> began a rehab assignment last week after having bone chips removed from his left elbow in June. Coulombe had been the most reliable reliever in the Orioles bullpen this season, sporting a 2.42 ERA in 29 appearances before going on the injured list. Veteran closer <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/k\/kimbrcr01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Craig Kimbrel<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who had an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2024\/06\/10\/orioles-craig-kimbrel-rebound-tough-stretch\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All-Star caliber first half<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, struggled coming out of the break before being <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2024\/09\/18\/orioles-dfa-craig-kimbrel\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">released by the Orioles<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on Wednesday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether their struggles stem from injuries, bad mechanics, or just faulty execution, the Orioles&#8217; offense has been virtually non-existent in the second half. Hyde is known for playing matchups, which under normal circumstances work for him. But Baltimore\u2019s circumstances are far from normal. Two key members of the Orioles offense, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/r\/rutscad01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adley Rutschman<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/o\/ohearry01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ryan O\u2019Hearn<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, are stuck in a second-half hitting slump. Baltimore has hit just .238 as a team coming out of the All-Star break. Which makes it hard to replace one struggling hitter when everyone is struggling.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Orioles Need to Find Their Early Season &#8220;Mojo&#8221;<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With 10 games left to play, the Orioles are still looking to punch their ticket to the postseason. Despite trailing New York by five games for the division, Baltimore holds the top seed in the AL Wild Card. Baltimore will close out their three-game series against San Francisco on Thursday, before playing their last homestand of the season, a three-game set against the Detroit Tigers. The Orioles will close out their season with a key divisional series against the Yankees before playing their final regular season series at Minnesota. Baltimore needs to regain their early season \u201cmojo,\u201d not just to make the postseason, but to avoid another early exit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;It&#8217;s been an unpleasant stretch here for the latter part of the summer. We&#8217;re going to figure this out and we&#8217;re going to get out of it,&#8221; Elias said. &#8220;I think we&#8217;re going to make the playoffs and do really well in the playoffs.
