(Brewers catcher <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/contrwi02.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-08-29_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">William) Contreras<\/a> gave me the same pitch that I was thinking and that\u2019s why I think I threw it with the conviction I (did). It was a big moment in the game.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wednesday marked the first time Peralta has held opponents scoreless in back-to-back starts this season and he\u2019s allowed just one over his last three.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt was great and much needed,\u201d Brewers manager <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/managers\/murphpa99.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pat Murphy<\/a> said.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Cool Off After Hot Start<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Brewers have been waiting for this version of Freddy Peralta ever since pitchers and catchers stepped onto the sun-drenched grass of West Phoenix for the first bullpen sessions of spring training.\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He\u2019d moved into the No. 1 role by default heading into the season after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/w\/woodrbr01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-08-29_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brandon Woodruff<\/a>\u2019s 2024 plans were wiped out by shoulder surgery last September and staff ace <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/b\/burneco01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-08-29_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Corbin Burnes<\/a> was <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2024\/02\/01\/corbin-burnes-traded-orioles\/\" target=\"_self\">dealt to the Baltimore Orioles<\/a> in the weeks before camp opened.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After Murphy named Peralta the Brewers\u2019 Opening Day starter, he delivered with an eight-strikeout performance against the New York Mets and held a 1.90 ERA through his first four starts, looking every bit the part of a staff ace.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From there, though, things just seemed to stop clicking. Over his next 20 starts, Peralta went 5-7 with a 4.60 ERA. While he struck out 126 batters, he also gave up 19 home runs and struggled at times to give Milwaukee the innings it desperately needed while trying to navigate an almost ridiculous number of injuries to its pitching staff.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the same time, though, Peralta still took the ball every five days and he leads the staff with 11 quality starts. He hasn\u2019t missed a single start this season \u2013 Thursday was his 27th \u2013 and even if the results weren\u2019t always there, his dependability alone has been invaluable in a season that has seen 17 different pitchers start a game.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>History Repeats Itself<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Peralta put together a similar run last season when he compiled a 2.81 ERA in his final 13 starts. He hinted for weeks that a similar surge felt just around the corner and he was close to unlocking whatever small adjustments were necessary to make it possible. Now it looks like he\u2019s doing just that.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHe\u2019s been through this before,\u201d Murphy said. \u201cHe\u2019s very motivated, he\u2019s very hungry and now he\u2019s showing why the organization had that much faith in him.&#8221; Murphy added, &#8220;He\u2019s getting better. He\u2019s eliminating some of the things he\u2019s done in the past that\u2019s gotten him in trouble and he\u2019s starting to believe again in his fastball and I think he\u2019s coming into his own.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Around the Horn<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/h\/hoskirh01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-08-29_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rhys Hoskins<\/a>\u2019 hot bat has cooled off considerably of late. The veteran slugger went 0-for-4 Thursday with a pair of strikeouts and has just three hits in his last 37 at-bats. \u2026 Outfielder <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/p\/perkibl01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-08-29_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Blake Perkins<\/a> went 2-for-3 Wednesday and is 17-for-48 (.354) with three doubles and nine RBIs over his last 18 games. \u2026 Right-handed <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2024\/07\/09\/all-star-closers-potential-return-brewers\/\" target=\"_self\">reliever<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=willide03,willia005dev&amp;search=Devin+Williams&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-08-29_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Devin Williams<\/a> returned to the mound for the first time in nearly a week and worked a scoreless ninth inning to earn his sixth save of the season.
