The Angels have yet to comment further on the severity of the injury. The veteran left-hander has an ERA of 5.03, his walks are up, and his strikeouts are down. It is unclear if the elbow is a lingering issue and contributed to Moore’s struggles this year.

Last year, by contrast, the 35-year-old had a 2.20 ERA and featured a 94 mph fastball. In 126 2/3 innings, Moore struck out 27.4 percent of batters last year and had a career-low 6.9% walk rate.

Miller’s Major League Debut

For his part, Ryan Miller will be making his first appearance in the big leagues after being drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2018. He was then selected last year by the Angels via the Rule 5 draft. In what has become known as a hitter’s league, Miller has sported a sparkling 2.45 ERA in 162 1/3 innings. He has struck out nearly a quarter of the batters faced and his walk rate hovers around five percent. In his last three starts at Salt Lake, Miller is 3-0 with a 0.92 ERA and 31 strikeouts.

Moore in the Future

It is probably too much to ask for a Moore return with around 30 games left in the season. The left-hander who came up with the Tampa Bay Rays was a reliable starter primarily with the Rays and the San Francisco Giants.

With Trout and Moore reportedly out for the remainder of the season, it seems like another blow in what has become an annual exercise of futility for the Angels.
