This comes after he was released by the Arizona Diamondbacks last month. A two-time Gold Glove winner, the 33-year-old has received strong grades for his blocking and control of the running game. Coming off his second Gold Glove, Barnhart caught <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/mileywa01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-08-06_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wade Miley<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8216;s no-hitter in 2021 before being traded to the Detroit Tigers. Throughout his 11-year big league career, Barnhart has been stronger behind the plate than at the plate. But since leaving Cincinnati ahead of the 2022 season, his offense has been steadily declining.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Barnhart spent the entire 2022 season with Detroit playing in 94 games while posting a .221\/.287\/.267 slash line. Following his stint with the Tigers, Barnhart signed a <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2024\/07\/06\/cubs-jed-hoyer-change-management\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">two-year contract with the Cubs<\/a> in 2023. However, he was designated for assignment after just 44 games. Appearing in 31 games with the Diamondbacks to begin the season, he was<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0designated for assignment and released last month. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite hitting .208\/.286\/.255 in the majors going back to 2022, Barnhart&#8217;s defensive work continues to get strong grades.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aiming to bring his veteran experience back to the organization where his career began, Barnhart is returning to the Reds to provide much-needed catching depth. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/stephty01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-08-06_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tyler Stephenson<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/mailelu01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-08-06_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Luke Maile<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are Cincinnati\u2019s primary catching duo, but third catcher <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/w\/wynnsau01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-08-06_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Austin Wynns<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is on the injured list. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/y\/yanger01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-08-06_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Eric Yang<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was called up from Triple-A Louisville to cover for Wynns but was outrighted back to Louisville once Maile returned.
