Coming into the series finale, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cease<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> had given up just one hit in each of his previous two starts. He threw 114 pitches with nine strikeouts for the Padres&#8217; fifth consecutive win.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 28-year-old right-hander was <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2024\/03\/13\/dylan-cease-padres-white-sox-trade\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">acquired in a trade<\/a> with the Chicago White Sox before Opening Day. Going into Thursday, he carried a 3.76 ERA with 159 strikeouts in 21 starts for San Diego. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cease one-hit Washington over seven innings on June 26th. His first attempt for a no-no was spoiled by his now-teammate <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/a\/arraelu01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-07-25_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Luis Arr\u00e1ez<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with a ninth-inning two-out single in 2022. Coming full circle, Arr\u00e1ez was the one who gave Cease the ball from the final out of his first no-hitter. He joins right-hander <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/musgrjo01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-07-25_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Joe Musgrove<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as the only Padres to throw a no-hitter in franchise history.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Houston Astros right-hander <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/b\/blancro01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-07-25_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ronel Blanco<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> threw the only other <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2024\/04\/01\/ronel-blanco-no-hitter\/\" target=\"_self\">no-hitter<\/a> this season at home against the Toronto Blue Jays in early April. Cease and the Padres are the third team to take a no-hitter into the ninth inning this season. On May 11th, the Atlanta Braves <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">took a combined no-hitter against the New York Mets into the ninth, before a two-run blast from <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/martijd02.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-07-25_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">J.D. Martinez<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> broke it up.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think it&#8217;ll set in even more as time goes,&#8221; Cease said of his first career no-hitter. &#8220;But I&#8217;ve been close, and to finally get it done, it&#8217;s one of those things that&#8217;s just &#8212; it feels so remarkable and hard to believe.
