Here are some memorable moments from these clashes between the National League and the American League.<\/p>\n<h2>Pirates Have Produced Many All-Star Game Memories<\/h2>\n<p><strong>1934 \u2013 AL 9, NL 7 at Polo Grounds, New York. <\/strong>This game is best known as the game where New York Giants pitcher <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/h\/hubbeca01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-07-11_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Carl Hubbell<\/a> struck out five future Hall-of-Famers in a row: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/r\/ruthba01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-07-11_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Babe Ruth<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/g\/gehrilo01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-07-11_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lou Gehrig<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/f\/foxxji01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-07-11_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jimmie Foxx<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/simmoal01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-07-11_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Al Simmons<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/cronijo01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-07-11_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Joe Cronin<\/a>. However, it was also the only All-Star Game where a Pirate stole home. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/t\/traynpi01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-07-11_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pie Traynor<\/a> accomplished the feat in the bottom of the fifth inning on the front end of a double steal while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/o\/ottme01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-07-11_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mel Ott<\/a> took second base.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1943 \u2013 AL 5, NL 3 at Shibe Park, Philadelphia. <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/d\/dimagvi01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-07-11_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vince DiMaggio<\/a> was to the DiMaggio brothers what Zeppo Marx was to the Marx Brothers. But the NL named Vince to play in the All-Star Game in 1943 and 1944 while a member of the Pirates. Dick Fortune of <em>The Pittsburgh Press<\/em> wrote, \u201cVince went into the game saddled with the job of upholding the honor of the DiMaggios. <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2019\/05\/04\/joe-dimaggio-symbolizes-how-baseball-has-changed\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">Joe<\/a> had been in several, and his work was outstanding. Dom also had a try at the All-Star glory and made good. Now, with Joe in the Army and Dominic in the Navy, Vince was determined to carry on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCarry on,\u201d he did. Vince was 3-for-3 with a single, triple, and home run. His triple was \u201cinches away from going over the left field wall,\u201d according to United Press. \u201cThat the senior loop didn\u2019t win was no fault of Vincent Paul,\u201d wrote Fortune. \u201cJoe and Dom should be right proud of their \u2018old\u2019 brother.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Kiner&#8217;s Time<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1949 \u2013 AL 11, NL 7 at Ebbets Field, Brooklyn.<\/strong> Pirates <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2024\/07\/10\/pirates-seven-home-runs-1947\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">slugger<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/k\/kinerra01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-07-11_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ralph Kiner<\/a> hit a home run in the All-Star Game in three consecutive years. On this day, Kiner\u2019s two-run shot off <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/b\/brisslo01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-07-11_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lou Brissie<\/a> in the bottom of the sixth brought the NL to within one run. Kiner did it with a sore right wrist. He remained in New York to have it X-rayed and missed the next day&#8217;s charity exhibition game in Cleveland. \u201cHow he sustained the injury was uncertain,\u201d wrote Jack Henry of the <em>Pittsburgh Sun-Telegraph<\/em>, \u201calthough he thought he may have done it while snapping photographs of the midseason classic.\u201d It was one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2024\/07\/04\/ten-strangest-reasons-missed-games-mlb\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">strangest reasons<\/a> for missing a game.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1950 \u2013 NL 4, AL 3 at Comiskey Park, Chicago. <\/strong>The AL was ahead, 3-2 when Kiner led off the top of the ninth against <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/h\/houttar01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-07-11_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Art Houtteman<\/a>. Wrote Les Biederman of <em>The Pittsburgh Press<\/em>, \u201cThe first pitch was a strike, and Kiner watched it. It was Houtteman who watched the next pitch.\u201d Kiner launched a towering drive that descended into the upper deck to tie the game. The NL won in the 14th inning on a home run by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/schoere01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-07-11_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Red Schoendienst<\/a>. Kiner played all 14 innings. A newspaper photo showed bow-tied Brooklyn Dodgers manager <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/shottbu01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-07-11_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Burt Shotton<\/a> pointing to his two grinning heroes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1951 \u2013 NL 8, AL 3, Briggs Stadium, Detroit. <\/strong>Kiner made it three straight with an eighth-inning solo blast into the left field upper deck off <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/p\/parneme01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-07-11_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mel Parnell<\/a>. The Pirates slugger\u2019s steak ended with the 1952 All-Star Game. That game was rained out after five innings before Kiner could make an appearance.<\/p>\n<h3>&#8220;I Never Thought You&#8217;d Curve Me&#8221;<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1956 \u2013 NL 7, AL 3 at Griffith Stadium, Washington, DC.<\/strong> Pirates pitcher <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/f\/frienbo01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-07-11_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bob Friend<\/a> was tabbed to start the All-Star Game for the NL. He pitched the first three innings and was awarded the win. Friend struck out <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2021\/09\/04\/williamsburg-a-red-sox-fairy-tale\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">Boston Red Sox legend<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/w\/willite01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-07-11_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ted Williams<\/a> with a curve ball to end a 1-2-3 first inning. Later, Friend ended the third inning by retiring Williams on a ground out with two men on base. Afterward, Williams was impressed. He told Biederman, \u201cHe\u2019s rough. . . I had never seen him before, but all he showed me was breaking stuff. No fastballs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We include this story because of what happened some 15 years later. In the fine 1993 book <em>Maz and the \u201960 Bucs<\/em>, Friend told author <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jimobriensportsauthor.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jim O\u2019Brien<\/a> about running into Williams at an airport in Atlanta. Williams was known for his uncanny ability to recall every at-bat he ever had in the majors. Friend walked up to Williams and introduced himself. Williams said, \u201cI remember you. You know, I never thought you\u2019d curve me.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Clemente Shines<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1961 \u2013 NL 5, AL 4 at Candlestick Park, San Francisco. <\/strong>Those of us who grew up in a certain era remember that for years, the NL\u2019s starting outfield was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=,aaronha01&amp;search=Henry+Aaron&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-07-11_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Henry Aaron<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/mayswi01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-07-11_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Willie Mays<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/clemero01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-07-11_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Roberto Clemente<\/a>. (Now and then, an intruder who had a good first half would displace one of them.) With the AL ahead 4-3 going into the bottom of the 10th, the NL\u2019s Great Triumvirate went to work. Aaron led off with a single-off pitcher, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/w\/wilheho01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-07-11_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hoyt Wilhelm<\/a>. He advanced to second when one of Wilhelm\u2019s knuckleballs eluded catcher <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/h\/howarel01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-07-11_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Elston Howard<\/a>. Mays then grounded a double over third base, scoring Aaron to tie the game. After <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/r\/robinfr02.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-07-11_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Frank Robinson<\/a> was hit by a pitch, Clemente strode to the batter\u2019s box. Clemente swung and missed a knuckler before lining the next one into right-center to win the game.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1971 \u2013 AL 6, NL 4 at Tiger Stadium, Detroit. <\/strong>Six future Hall-of-Famers hit home runs: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/b\/benchjo01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-07-11_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Johnny Bench<\/a>, Aaron, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/j\/jacksre01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-07-11_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Reggie Jackson<\/a>, Robinson, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/k\/killeha01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-07-11_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Harmon Killebrew<\/a>, and Clemente. Talk about one\u2019s baseball cards coming to life! Clemente\u2019s eighth-inning at-bat was hilarious. He was visibly disgusted over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/l\/lolicmi01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-07-11_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mickey Lolich<\/a>&#8216;s floppy, slow outside pitches to him. Thus, Clemente took matters into his own hands and smacked a high, 3-1 pitch into the center field stands.<br \/>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/YOLKS00tV08?si=19g6aJCHpwK9AIYR\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Another Pirate, pitcher <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/e\/ellisdo01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-07-11_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dock Ellis<\/a>, has the ignominious distinction of surrendering Jackson\u2019s homer, a tape measure shot that would have left the venerable old ballpark if it hadn\u2019t hit the right field light tower.<br \/>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/enkfX2-uhYE?si=b61VHEpsI2VJ4wbf\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3>The Invisible Man, the Cobra, and the Third Base Coach<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1972 \u2013 NL 4, AL 3 at Atlanta Stadium, Atlanta. <\/strong>Pirates pitcher <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/b\/blassst01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-07-11_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Steve Blass<\/a>, a <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2019\/01\/17\/pirates-legend-steve-blass-broadcasting-2019\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">franchise icon<\/a> and winner of two complete games in the 1971 World Series, made his only appearance in an All-Star Game. At least that\u2019s what we were told. Unfortunately for Pirates fans, NBC had technical difficulties and lost the picture during the entire inning he pitched.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1979 \u2013 NL 7, AL 6 at Kingdome, Seattle. <\/strong>Pirates right fielder <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/p\/parkeda01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-07-11_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dave Parker<\/a> didn\u2019t expect to be named MVP of this All-Star Game. \u201cThey had to practically drag me over to get the award,\u201d he told Dan Donovan of <em>The Pittsburgh Press<\/em>. \u201cI was already headed to the shower.\u201d Parker, who played all nine innings and went 1-for-3, won the award on the strength of two outfield assists. The first one came in the seventh inning when he lost <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/r\/riceji01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-07-11_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jim Rice<\/a>\u2019s fly ball against the Kingdome\u2019s ceiling. Parker retrieved the ball in time to gun down Rice at third base. In the eighth inning, Parker threw out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=downibr01,downin002bri&amp;search=Brian+Downing&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-07-11_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brian Downing<\/a> at home plate when he tried to score on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/n\/nettlgr01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-07-11_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Graig Nettles<\/a>\u2019 single to right field.<br \/>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/1PH6XJypKno?si=TWeatHpgmGI1xolG\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>1994 \u2013 NL 8, AL 7 at Three Rivers Stadium, Pittsburgh. <\/strong>With the score tied, 7-7, in the bottom of the 10th, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=gwynnto01,gwynnto02&amp;search=Tony+Gwynn&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-07-11_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tony Gwynn<\/a> of the San Diego Padres greeted pitcher <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/b\/bereja01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-07-11_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jason Bere<\/a> with a single to center. The Montreal Expos\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/a\/aloumo01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-07-11_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Moises Alou<\/a> followed with a drive to left-center field, scoring Gwynn, whose slide barely beat the relay. What\u2019s this got to do with the Pirates, you ask? The winning run was waved home by Pirates manager <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/managers\/leylaji99.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jim Leyland<\/a>, serving as third base coach. Now you ask, is that all you can come up with from the last 45 years?
