For the second season in a row, the Mets have been one of the biggest letdowns in baseball. At 28-36, their postseason chances are dwindling, leading MLB insiders to suggest a deadline fire sale could be imminent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/sports\/mlb\/columnist\/bob-nightengale\/2024\/06\/09\/mlb-players-starting-to-fear-for-their-safety-from-gamblers\/74028741007\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bob Nightengale of USA Today<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reports that &#8220;a handful of their prized players [are] expected to be dealt.&#8221; With <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pete Alonso<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> set to hit free agency in the offseason, multiple general managers expect the 29-year-old to be traded. Alonso and the Mets avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $20.5 million contract in January. Alonso reportedly declined a seven-year, $158 million extension last summer and will want &#8220;at least $200 million&#8221; in free agency.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because of the Mets&#8217; luxury tax status, they would only receive a fourth-round draft pick if they tagged Alonso with a qualifying offer. So, insiders believe the Mets will trade their All-Star first baseman to better themselves in the long run.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>MLB Insiders Reveal Top Trade Destinations for Pete Alonso<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While sluggers generally are less coveted than pitchers at the deadline, there are plenty of teams that MLB insiders believe could benefit from having Pete Alonso in their lineup.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Chicago Cubs<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/05\/30\/sports\/what-pete-alonso-mets-stars-could-bring-back-in-potential-fire-sale\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jon Heyman of the New York Post<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> called the Cubs the \u201cobvious potential suitor\u201d for the three-time All-Star. Chicago is expected to be <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2024\/06\/05\/jed-hoyer-cubs-trade-deadline\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">buyers at the deadline<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and have been linked to Alonso for the past few years. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/b\/buschmi02.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-06-10_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Michael Busch<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has gotten the bulk of work at first base, but has since lost playing time to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/w\/wisdopa01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-06-10_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Patrick Wisdom<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But for the Cubs to contend, they need more offensive firepower, which they would get by trading for Alonso.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Seattle Mariners<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nightengale said Alonso may be the \u201cperfect fit\u201d for the Seattle Mariners who, despite a struggling offense, hold a five-game lead in the AL West. Seattle has a star-studded starting rotation, but they\u2019re hitting only .222 as a team, which is the third-worst in the majors. Their disappointing offensive production led the Mariners to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2024\/05\/31\/seattle-mariners-fire-brent-brown-mlb\/\" target=\"_self\">part ways<\/a> with their offensive coordinator and bench coach<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> last month.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First baseman <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/f\/francty01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-06-10_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ty France<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> had finally started coming around offensively before being placed on the 10-day injured list with a heel fracture over the weekend. Trading for Alonso would give Seattle the offensive punch they need to make just their second playoff appearance since 2002.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Houston Astros<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another team that insiders believe makes sense for Alonso is the Houston Astros. Despite their early struggles and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2024\/06\/05\/cristian-javier-jose-urquidy-elbow-surgery\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">devastating pitching injuries<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the Astros are still very much in contention this year. General manager Dana Brown has been clear that Houston will be buyers at the deadline,e and one area of need is at first base.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Astros rank 29th in offensive production at first base. Houston optioned former MVP <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/a\/abreujo02.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-06-10_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jos\u00e9 Abreu<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2024\/04\/30\/astros-to-option-veteran-jose-abreu\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">West Palm Beach<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to work on his swing amid his early offensive struggles. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=singljo02,single002jon&amp;search=Jon+Singleton&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-06-10_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jon Singleton<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who has started 35 games at first base, has not done much for the Astros offensively either.
