Director of hitting strategy <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=dehart000jar\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jarret DeHart<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and assistant hitting coach <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/j\/josepto01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tommy Joseph<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will expand their current roles to compensate for Brown\u2019s absence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brown, who specializes on the mental side of baseball, was hired by the Mariners in November to supplement DeHart. Brown also served as a bench coach for manager (and former teammate) <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/servasc01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scott Servais<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Seattle sits in first place in the American League West by three games, largely due to their strong pitching staff. The Mariners have a collective ERA of 3.58, the ninth lowest in the majors, but their offense ranks among the league\u2019s least productive.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seattle has scored the second-fewest runs (3.6 per game) and lead the league in strikeouts with 567, 27 more than second-worst Oakland. The Mariners are hitting .211\/.295\/.361 as a team and are batting six percent below league average overall.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brown, who previously served as a minor league coordinator for Seattle, served as the Marlins hitting coach last season. Brent Brown had success helping Miami reach the postseason in 2023. Previously, he won the World Series in the pandemic-shortened season in 2020, serving as a hitting coach for the Dodgers. He was hired after then-bullpen coach <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/v\/vogtst01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stephen Vogt<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who would have been promoted to a bench coach, took the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2023\/11\/06\/stephen-vogt-guardians-manager\/\" target=\"_self\">Guardians managerial position<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the offseason, the Mariners front office expressed a desire to reduce the team\u2019s strikeout-heavy tendencies. This led to the departures of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/h\/hernate01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Teoscar Hern\u00e1ndez<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/f\/fordmi01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mike Ford<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/k\/kelenja01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jarred Kelenic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/suareeu01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eugenio Su\u00e1rez<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/murphto04.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tom Murphy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Though the Mariners are striking out at a 28.3% rate, easily the worst in the majors. While Seattle brought in players with strikeout tendencies, their ongoing problem with strikeouts may have played a role in Brown\u2019s departure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe know we are capable of so much more,\u201d manager Scott Servais said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Servais will continue to serve as Seattle\u2019s manager, while DeHart and Joseph assume expanded roles with the Mariners hitters.
