{"id":75119,"date":"2024-05-31T01:25:16","date_gmt":"2024-05-31T05:25:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/?p=75119"},"modified":"2024-05-31T01:26:05","modified_gmt":"2024-05-31T05:26:05","slug":"gary-sanchez-comes-up-big-brewers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2024\/05\/31\/gary-sanchez-comes-up-big-brewers\/","title":{"rendered":"One Offseason Signing is Starting to Come Up Big for the Brewers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MILWAUKEE \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/sanchga02.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-05-31_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gary S\u00e1nchez<\/a> was a late and somewhat pricey addition to the Milwaukee Brewers\u2019 roster but boy, has he been a good one.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The veteran slugger has been swinging a hot bat for the Brewers of late, batting .316 (6-for-19), and he has also been coming up big when the team needs it most, no more so than Thursday afternoon when he broke a 4-4 tie with a two-run home run in the eighth inning that proved to be the difference in Milwaukee&#8217;s 6-4 victory over the Chicago Cubs at American Family Field.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"es\">Gary S\u00e1nchez for the lead! <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/sBYS8ObcrG\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pic.twitter.com\/sBYS8ObcrG<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 MLB (@MLB) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MLB\/status\/1796264364431024441?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">May 30, 2024<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0It was the second time this season that the Brewers won a game on a late S\u00e1nchez homer. It was also the second time he did so on a two-strike, two-out pitch that was outside of the zone.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAnytime you\u2019re on the field you have the opportunity to help the team win,\u201d S\u00e1nchez said. \u201cIf that\u2019s not today, the opportunity can be tomorrow. I\u2019ve been able to get some opportunities of late and hopefully that can continue to get there.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Gary S\u00e1nchez Coming Up Huge for Milwaukee Brewers<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Milwaukee <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2024\/02\/07\/gary-sanchez-milwaukee-brewers\/\" target=\"_self\">signed S\u00e1nchez<\/a> to a one-year, $7 million contract at the start of spring training, in large part to help rectify a longstanding issue with hitting left-handed pitching. But his late signing, combined with a wrist injury suffered while working out prior to signing, left him playing catch-up when Cactus League play got underway.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regular season starter <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/contrwi02.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-05-31_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">William Contreras<\/a>\u2019 scorching-hot bat and iron man durability behind the plate, as well as a steady dose of right-handed opposing starters, initially limited Sanchez\u2019s playing time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Opportunity presented itself, though, when first baseman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/h\/hoskirh01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-05-31_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rhys Hoskins<\/a> landed on the injured list. S\u00e1nchez started making more frequent appearances in manager <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/managers\/murphpa99.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pat Murphy<\/a>\u2019s lineup, both at first base and designated hitter, with the occasional start behind the plate on days when Murphy moved Contreras into the DH role.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As S\u00e1nchez&#8217;s playing time has increased, so has his production and in turn, Murphy\u2019s confidence in giving him more opportunities against right-handers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHe\u2019s proven time and time again he\u2019s very very capable against lefties, for sure, but also he\u2019s capable as he proved against righties,\u201d Murphy said. \u201cHe can hit in the clutch and gives you a good at-bat. He\u2019s gonna have some strikeouts but the guy is dangerous and everybody in the league knows it. I\u2019m happy for him. He\u2019s kind of shoved it in our faces a little bit like, \u2018Hey, I can hit more than lefties.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Hoskins Getting Close<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speaking of Hoskins, Murphy said there\u2019s a good chance he\u2019ll be back on the active roster next week when the Brewers travel to Philadelphia, where Hoskins played six seasons before signing with Milwaukee in January.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, there\u2019s an outside chance that Hoskins could return as early as this weekend for Milwaukee\u2019s interleague series against the Chicago White Sox.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNo decisions have been made but he\u2019s been trending in the right direction,\u201d Murphy said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Roster Moves<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Brewers added a fresh arm to their bullpen before the game by recalling right-hander <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/h\/hergeke01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-05-31_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kevin Herget<\/a> from Nashville.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Herget appeared in two games for Milwaukee earlier this season and allowed two runs over 3 \u2154 innings of work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To clear a roster spot for Herget, Milwaukee designated right-handed reliever <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=whitemi03,white-001mit&amp;search=Mitch+White&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-05-31_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mitch White<\/a> for assignment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>On the Farm<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Right-hander <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=yoho--000cra&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-05-31_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Craig Yoho<\/a> earned a promotion to Double-A Biloxi after an impressive showing at High-A Wisconsin, where he posted a 0.44 ERA in 16 appearances this season. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The former Indiana University standout was Milwaukee\u2019s eighth-round pick in last year\u2019s MLB Draft and went on to post a 10.13 ERA in three appearances for the Brewers\u2019 Arizona Complex League squad after signing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Biloxi, Yoho will join a pitching staff headlined by Milwaukee\u2019s top overall prospect, right-hander <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=misior000jac&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-05-31_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jacob Misiorowski<\/a> who allowed two runs (one earned) while striking out seven in four innings against Pensacola Thursday night. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Misiorowski, the Brewers\u2019 second-round pick in the 2022 MLB Draft, has a 2.52 ERA and has struck out 54 batters over 39 \u2153 innings this season.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Up Next<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Brewers welcome another rival from just down I-94 when they open a three-game interleague series against the Chicago White Sox Friday night at American Family Field. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/myersto01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-05-31_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tobias Myers<\/a> (1-2, 4.43 ERA) gets the start for Milwaukee (32-23, 1st NL Central) with right-hander <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/f\/feddeer01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-05-31_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Erick Fedde<\/a> (4-1, 2.80) getting the nod for Chicago (15-42, 5th AL Central).<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Photo Credit: \u00a9 Benny Sieu-USA TODAY Sports<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MILWAUKEE \u2013 Gary S\u00e1nchez was a late and somewhat pricey addition to the Milwaukee Brewers\u2019 roster but boy, has he been a good one.
