Not long ago, Orioles fans were outraged that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mateo<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> made the Opening Day roster <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2024\/03\/23\/orioles-holliday-minor-leagues\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">over younger prospects.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Now, it&#8217;s hard to picture the 28-year-old shortstop turned super-utility man being anywhere else.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0A natural shortstop, the Orioles plan for Mateo was to get him comfortable in the outfield and at second base. Going into spring training, Mateo has moved around the diamond since making his big-league debut in 2020. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He has 39 career appearances in the outfield, 48 at second and nine at third. But now, the utility man is settling in as the Orioles everyday second baseman.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Jorge Mateo Continues to Flash His Versatility<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHe just adds so much versatility to us because he can play so many other positions, and he is so athletic,\u201d Orioles manager <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/h\/hydebr99.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-05-21_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brandon Hyde<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> said. \u201cWe just kind of want to keep our options open with him.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jorge Mateo has tested the patience of Orioles fans over the years with his inconsistent offense.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He had a strong first month last season batting .347\/.395\/.667 through 23 games going into May. But he was less effective the rest of the way, hitting six of his seven homers before May 1st. Despite Mateo\u2019s limited offensive contributions in Baltimore &#8211; batting .228\/.276\/.376 over the past four seasons &#8211; his value lies in his defensive skills and baserunning abilities. Nearly two months into the season, the Orioles utilityman has drawn starts at second base, centerfield, and shortstop. He recorded hits in seven of his last eight games entering Monday\u2019s series opener against the St. Louis Cardinals, going 8-for-28.
