{"id":73241,"date":"2024-05-14T13:54:11","date_gmt":"2024-05-14T17:54:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/?p=73241"},"modified":"2024-05-14T13:54:11","modified_gmt":"2024-05-14T17:54:11","slug":"astros-postseason-horrendous-start","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2024\/05\/14\/astros-postseason-horrendous-start\/","title":{"rendered":"The Astros Can Still Contend Despite the Horrendous Start"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite having their worst start in ten years, it\u2019s too early to count the Houston Astros out of the postseason.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Houston Astros have not had the season that they and many in the baseball world had anticipated.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After finishing just one win away from their third consecutive World Series appearance last season, the Astros look like <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2024\/04\/25\/astros-early-season-problems\/\" target=\"_self\">a complete shell of themselves.<\/a> Houston is 16-25 and sits 6.5 games back in the American League West following Monday\u2019s win over the Oakland Athletics. Despite sitting nine games under .500, they are showing promising signs of a resurgence having won four of their last five games.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Astros have been a staple in the postseason having made it to the ALCS in seven consecutive years, including two World Series championships. With the AL West not being dominated by any one team, Houston still has a viable shot at the postseason. After all, the 2005 edition of the team made it to the World Series after starting the season with a 15-30 record.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>How the Astros Can Take a Page from the 2005 Team<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While it seems nearly impossible for the Astros to make the postseason, fans who have been around a while know better. But the 2005 team stumbled out of the gate like this year&#8217;s team. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf you could look for a way to lose a baseball game, we could find a way to lose it,\u201d Biggio said. \u201cIt wasn\u2019t just one guy.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By June 1st, Houston was 19-32 leading the local newspaper to print a tombstone that read &#8220;RIP Astros season; April 5, 2005-June 1, 2005.&#8221; The tombstone marked a turning point in the season for the 2005 Astros. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Houston posted the best record in baseball from June 1st through the end of the regular season going 70-41. The Astros clinched a Wild Card spot on the final day of the season, ultimately advancing to the World Series.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>The Astros Postseason Hopes Still Alive<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flash forward to now and not much has changed. Instead of Clemens, the Astros have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/v\/verlaju01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Justin Verlander<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/v\/valdefr01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Framber Valdez<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> anchoring the rotation. While <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/a\/altuvjo01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jose Altuve<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/t\/tuckeky01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kyle Tucker<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/a\/alvaryo01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yordan Alvarez<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> lead a formidable Astros lineup.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fangraphs.com\/standings\/playoff-odds\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fangraphs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Houston has a 43.3 percent chance to make the playoffs and a 4.1 percent chance of winning the World Series. Consistent victories are crucial for the Houston Astros to bounce back and make their eighth consecutive postseason appearance this season.
