Gasser was selected by the San Diego Padres in the 2021 MLB Draft. The left-hander finished 2022 with a combined 3.94 ERA in 137 innings with a 29.7 percent strikeout rate and walks a 9 percent rate. While Gasser was in the conversation for a spot in the rotation, he was out at the end of March with a bone spur in his left elbow. He didn’t make his first start of the year in Triple-A until April 24. Gasser has six walks and four homers allowed in his 12 innings but has 17 strikeouts.

Robert Gasser gets the call!

Gasser doesn’t have the flashiest stuff, but he has rocked high K% throughout his MiLB career, including a 33.3 K% through 12.0 IP in AAA this season

He has a great sweeper and consistently pounds the top of the zone with fastballs

Congratulations! https://t.co/bETBL2QkJw pic.twitter.com/ofLlevkOYC

— Thomas Nestico (@TJStats) May 9, 2024

Gasser’s Resume

In Gasser’s first full season in the Brewers system, he won the International League Pitcher of the Year Award courtesy of a 9-1 record and a 3.79 in 25 starts. His 166 strikeouts broke a Nashville Sounds single-season record. Gasser isn’t a flamethrower like Jordan Hicks or Mason Miller, but he brings finesse to his pitching repertoire. He’s a pitcher who relies on his command and he features a five-pitch arsenal- four-seam fastball, sinker, cutter, changeup and slider. The hard stuff in his pitches reaches the low 90s yet his location is what stands out the most. Of his five pitches, his slider is his best one, it’s a dangerous pitch that sweeps away from lefties or towards the back foot of righties. Gasser will look to use his slider as his put-away pitch.

Gasser’s Promotion Might Be Temporary

Freddy Peralta is going to miss one start through the rotation this week. Peralta is out with a five-game suspension for his part in the Brewers-Rays brawl a week ago. Gasser’s promotion might be brief only to cover for Peralta. He’ll jump into the rotation next to Bryse Wilson, Colin Rea, Joe Ross and Tobias Myers. Even if Gasser returns to the minors, he can always come up later in the season. If he makes an immediate impact, he could potentially stay in the rotation for the rest of the campaign.

Main Photo: Credit: © Kyle Ross-USA TODAY Sports

The Milwaukee Brewers are seeing many young faces in the majors this season.
