Not only is he the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2022\/10\/27\/postseason-home-run-leaders-mlb\/\" target=\"_self\">active leader in postseason home runs<\/a>, but he&#8217;s closing in on history.<\/p>\n<h2>Jose Altuve Is on the Brink of History<\/h2>\n<p>Entering this season, only four primary second basemen have 200+ home runs and 300+ stolen bases- <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=morgajo02,morgajo01&#038;search=Joe+Morgan&#038;utm_medium=linker&#038;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&#038;utm_campaign=2024-05-03_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Joe Morgan<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/sandbry01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&#038;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&#038;utm_campaign=2024-05-03_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ryne Sandberg<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/a\/alomaro01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&#038;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&#038;utm_campaign=2024-05-03_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Roberto Alomar<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/b\/biggicr01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&#038;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&#038;utm_campaign=2024-05-03_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Craig Biggio<\/a>. Nevertheless, he could potentially surpass Sandberg for stolen bases, if he continues to do so at the rate he&#8217;s doing it. Altuve remains one of baseball&#8217;s best hitters this year, currently ranking seventh in OPS (.944) with a .341 batting average, nine doubles and seven home runs. The next closest hitter at that level and age is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/p\/perezsa02.shtml?utm_medium=linker&#038;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&#038;utm_campaign=2024-05-03_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Salvador Perez<\/a> of the Kansas City Royals, who turns 34 next week. Perez is sixth in the league in OPS (1.009) with a .355 batting average.<\/p>\n<h3>Altuve on Pace to Break a Franchise Record<\/h3>\n<p>Altuve is on pace to break Houston&#8217;s franchise record for hits this season, which he set a decade ago with 225. He currently holds the first, second, fourth and fifth-most hits in a single season by an Astros player with 225, 215, 204 and 200 respectively. This season, He has 45 hits which is the American League lead. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/b\/bettsmo01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&#038;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&#038;utm_campaign=2024-05-03_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mookie Betts<\/a> is ahead of Altuve with 49.<\/p>\n<h3>Living Up to His Contract Extension<\/h3>\n<p>Altuve was one of four key Astros players facing free agency in the next two years. Third baseman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/b\/bregmal01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&#038;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&#038;utm_campaign=2024-05-03_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alex Bregman<\/a> is set to become a free agent after this season.
