Kimbrel threw\u00a0six straight balls to open Sunday\u2019s outing two nights after throwing eight of 24 pitches for strikes. His noticeable struggles prompted the first of two mound visits from Orioles manager <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/h\/hydebr99.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-04-29_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brandon Hyde<\/a> and athletic trainer Brian Ebel.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The way he was walking around didn&#8217;t look right,&#8221; Hyde said of what prompted that talk.<\/p>\n<p>He issued a four-pitch lead-off walk and worked a 3-2 count against <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/mccanky01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-04-29_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kyle McCann<\/a> before the rookie\u2019s go-ahead two-run homer. Kimbrel walked off the mound with Ebel while Hyde signalled for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/t\/tatedi01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-04-29_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dillon Tate<\/a>. The right-hander finished the inning for an Orioles team that is now 2-4 in one-run games.<\/p>\n<h2>Craig Kimbrel Day-to-Day with Apparent Injury<\/h2>\n<p>Hyde told reporters on Monday that Kimbrel is day-to-day with back tightness. Orioles fans learned after Friday\u2019s loss to Oakland that nobody is harder on their new closer than the man himself.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis game\u2019s really on me,\u201d Kimbrel said in his postgame interview. \u201cEverybody did everything they needed to for us to get a win except for me locking it down.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Kimbrel Pushing for History in Wake of Injury<\/h3>\n<p>This was the veteran closer\u2019s second attempt at recording his eighth save of the season and 425th of his career. Kimbrel surpassed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/w\/wagnebi02.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-04-29_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Billy Wagner<\/a> earlier in the week with his <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2024\/04\/15\/craig-kimbrel-orioles-closer-history\/\" target=\"_self\">423rd career save<\/a> and sits one save behind <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/j\/janseke01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-04-29_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kenley Jansen<\/a> (425) for fifth all-time. Kimbrel&#8217;s fastball was in the mid-90s, but something was visibly wrong.<\/p>\n<p>Hyde said afterward that the future Hall of Famer was still in the training room being evaluated. \u201cI don&#8217;t know what the timetable is with Craig if any at all,\u201d Hyde said about the nine-time All-Star. &#8220;We&#8217;ll see. I think we&#8217;ve been playing pretty good baseball; we&#8217;ve just had a couple of unfortunate kinds of endings in this series.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Baltimore signed Kimbrel to a one-year, $13 million deal this offseason to fill the void left by <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2024\/02\/10\/orioles-bautista-second-surgery\/\" target=\"_self\">injured closer <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/b\/bautife01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-04-29_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">F\u00e9lix Bautista<\/a>. Despite arguably exceeding expectations, Kimbrel was less forgiving than his manager or teammates after his outing on Friday. Kimbrel was not available to the media following Sunday\u2019s game.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere are nights when you don\u2019t have your best stuff and you can work through it. It doesn\u2019t matter if I have my best stuff out there or I don\u2019t have it. I\u2019ve got to figure out a way to make it through.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kimbrel (3-1) has seven saves in 13 appearances and was tagged with his first loss of the season on Sunday. The 39-year-old has an inflated 3.18 ERA after giving up three runs to the A\u2019s over 1 \u2153 innings. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Going into Friday\u2019s outing, Kimbrel had a 0.81 ERA after throwing 10 shutout innings since blowing his first save on April 1st.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the game, Orioles catcher <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/r\/rutscad01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Adley Rutschman<\/a> said, &#8220;I think that Craig&#8217;s a phenomenal pitcher. Obviously, he&#8217;s going to bounce back.
