But it turned out to be a fantastic Sunday for Rays right-hander <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/p\/pepiory01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ryan Pepiot<\/a>, who pitched an absolute gem in six innings of action. Pepiot looked comfortable after his first start against the Texas Rangers as he put a career-best 11 strikeouts without a walk. He only allowed three hits over six scoreless innings and there were 38 of his first 51 pitchers for strikes. Colorado nearly spoiled Pepiot&#8217;s outing with a rally in the eighth against reliever <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/matonph01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-04-08_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Phil Maton<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Ryan Pepiot Puts on a Clinic at Coors Field<\/h2>\n<p>Pepiot becomes the first opponent at Coors Field to have a scoreless outing with zero walks and more than 10 strikeouts. His slider and changeup were on point, as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/t\/tovarez01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ezequiel Tovar<\/a> struck out three times with a walk while first baseman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/t\/toglimi01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Michael Toglia<\/a> struck out three times with a walk. Third baseman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/mcmahry01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ryan McMahon<\/a> struck out twice in the loss, while seven other Rockies batters struck out at least once. But in the eighth inning against Maton, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/caveja01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-04-08_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jake Cave<\/a> tripled, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/d\/diazel01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-04-08_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Elias D\u00edaz<\/a> singled and Maton walked the next two batters to load the bases with no out. The Rockies weren&#8217;t able to muster out any runs when they grounded out with a fielder&#8217;s choice and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/b\/bryankr01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-04-08_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kris Bryant<\/a> hit into an inning-ending double play.<\/p>\n<h3>What&#8217;s Next for the Rockies?<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2024\/04\/05\/2024-rockies-may-hit-new-low\/\" target=\"_self\">Colorado needs to find their confidence<\/a> and a winning attitude. They&#8217;ll begin the week with their second series Arizona Diamondbacks in less than two weeks. Early signs of a horrific season-opening road trip might be a sign the Rockies might not be good again this year.
