{"id":68907,"date":"2024-03-22T17:30:22","date_gmt":"2024-03-22T21:30:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/?p=68907"},"modified":"2024-03-22T16:52:54","modified_gmt":"2024-03-22T20:52:54","slug":"orioles-starting-rotation-opening-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2024\/03\/22\/orioles-starting-rotation-opening-day\/","title":{"rendered":"Orioles Announce Starting Rotation Ahead of Opening Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Baltimore Orioles have set their season-opening starting rotation with their newly acquired ace Corbin Burnes leading the five-man rotation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/b\/burneco01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Corbin Burnes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will get the ball for the Orioles as they face the Angels on Opening Day, March 28. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/r\/rodrigr01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grayson Rodriguez<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will start game two on March 30th, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/w\/wellsty01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tyler Wells<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will close out the three-game series on March 31. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/k\/kremede01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dean Kremer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will open the three-game series against Kansas City on April 1, while <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/i\/irvinco01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cole Irvin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> starts game two on April 2. Each of the Orioles\u2019 first six games will be played at Camden Yards. Then, the Orioles will travel to Pittsburgh to begin a six-game road trip.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>The Orioles Will Open the Season Without Two Key Starters<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Baltimore will be without two key starters, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/b\/bradiky01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kyle Bradish<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/meansjo01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">John Means<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who will <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2024\/02\/15\/orioles-bradish-means-injuries\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">open the season on the injured list<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bradish was diagnosed with a sprained ulnar collateral ligament last month and began a throwing program after receiving a platelet-rich plasma injection in his elbow. Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said earlier this week that Bradish is throwing off the mound and \u201cresponding well.\u201d According to Hyde, the 27-year-old has been throwing mainly fastballs \u201cextremely well\u201d and \u201cmight have spun a couple breaking balls.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">John Means had Tommy John surgery in 2022 and was activated from the injured list by the Orioles in September. Shortly after returning to the team, he had a flare-up and sat out the American League Division Series. The flare-up set the 30-year-old lefty back a month in his off-season throwing program. Means has thrown multiple live bullpen sessions and hopes to return to the Orioles rotation by late April.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Plans for Any Setbacks<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Barring any setbacks, Orioles general manager Mike Elias hopes to have Bradish and Means back before the All-Star break. In the meantime, Tyler Wells and Cole Irvin will join Burnes, Rodriguez, and Kremer in the Orioles\u2019 starting rotation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wells was one of Baltimore\u2019s best starters in the first half last year and is \u201cthrowing the ball great,\u201d according to Hyde. Wells has given up just two runs over 10 2\/3 innings of work this spring, earning him the third rotation spot.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Irvin started camp with five shutout innings but has given up 10 runs over his two Grapefruit League starts. In his first season in Baltimore last year, Irvin pitched to a 4.42 ERA through 77 1\/3 innings.
