Mizuhara was in South Korea for the Seoul Series on Wednesday and has been working with Ohtani since 2018.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2024-03-20\/gambling-story\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Los Angeles Times<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Ohtani\u2019s name surfaced in the investigation of Orange County resident Mathew Bowyer. This led Ohtani\u2019s team to look into the matter and discover the alleged theft by Mizuhara to bet with Bowyer. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/story\/_\/id\/39768770\/dodgers-shohei-ohtani-interpreter-fired-theft\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sources told ESPN<\/a> that at least $4.5 million in wire transfers were sent from Ohtani\u2019s bank account to a Southern California bookmaking operation. Initially, a spokesperson for Ohtani told ESPN that he transferred the funds to cover Mizuhara\u2019s gambling debt. The spokesperson arranged an interview between Mizuhara and ESPN on Tuesday but later said Ohtani\u2019s legal team would issue a statement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a statement, the West Hollywood law firm Berk Brettler, said, \u201cIn the course of responding to recent media inquiries, we discovered that Shohei has been the victim of a massive theft, and we are turning the matter over to the authorities.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3>Shohei Ohtani&#8217;s Legal Team Accuses Interpreter of &#8220;Massive Theft&#8221;<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The U.S. Attorney\u2019s Office in Los Angeles oversees the investigation into Mathew Bowyer, but Bowyer hasn&#8217;t been charged with a crime. Bowyer\u2019s attorney told the media that Bowyer never had contact with Ohtani. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to ESPN, Mizuhara placed bets on international soccer matches and other sports -\u2014but not baseball\u2014starting in 2021. Bowyer was allegedly aware of the name on the wire transfers but \u201cchose not to ask any questions\u201d as long as payments came in. However, sources told ESPN that Bowyer allowed people to believe Ohtani was a client boost business.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mizuhara told ESPN on Tuesday that he asked Ohtani to pay off his gambling debt last year. He said he had previously made bets on DraftKings and assumed that bets placed with Bowyer were legal. Ohtani wasn\u2019t happy about Mizuhara&#8217;s gambling debts but decided to pay it off for him so he didn\u2019t do it again. Two wire payments of $500,000 were allegedly sent to an associate of Bowyer from Ohtani\u2019s account. Multiple sources have said that Ohtani doesn\u2019t gamble and that the funds covered Mizuhara\u2019s losses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;I want everyone to know Shohei had zero involvement in betting. I want people to know I did not know this was illegal. I learned my lesson the hard way. I will never do sports betting ever again.&#8221;<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Wednesday, Mizuhara told ESPN that Ohtani had no knowledge of his gambling debts and had not transferred money to the bookmaker\u2019s associate. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Major League Baseball prohibits \u201cany player, umpire, or Club or League official or employee\u201d from betting on baseball or making bets on any sport illegally.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Shohei Ohtani signed a record <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2023\/12\/09\/shohei-ohtani-record-breaking-contract\/\" target=\"_self\">10-year, $700 million<\/a> contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers in December.
