{"id":68585,"date":"2024-03-19T11:00:59","date_gmt":"2024-03-19T15:00:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/?p=68585"},"modified":"2024-03-18T23:35:26","modified_gmt":"2024-03-19T03:35:26","slug":"jefferson-rojas-future-cub","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2024\/03\/19\/jefferson-rojas-future-cub\/","title":{"rendered":"This Future Cub is Turning the Most Heads in Mesa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Most of this spring at Cubs camp has focused on prospects such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/crowape01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-03-18_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pete Crow-Armstrong<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/b\/buschmi02.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-03-18_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Michael Busch<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/mervima01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-03-18_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Matt Mervis<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=horton001cad,horton000cad&amp;search=Cade+Horton&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-03-18_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cade Horton<\/a>.\u00a0 But digging deeper, one of the players who might end up being one of the best of the crop is one who barely can rent a car on his own.\u00a0 Future Cub <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=rojas-003jef&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-03-18_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jefferson Rojas<\/a>, the 18-year-old shortstop out of the Dominican Republic, has been turning heads for all the right reasons.<\/p>\n<p>Signed in the 2022 international class, Rojas needed just one game in the Rookie-level Arizona complex to impress the Cubs brass.\u00a0 He was quickly promoted to Low-A Myrtle Beach.\u00a0 Rojas finished the year with a .268 batting average and an OPS of .750.\u00a0 Obviously, it is tough to project whether an 18-year-old will definitely make the major league team eventually.\u00a0 Expectations are that he is still two years away from playing regularly on the major league squad.\u00a0 However, this didn\u2019t stop him from getting at-bats this spring.\u00a0 His lone hit in six at-bats was a double and more opportunities could be coming his way.<\/p>\n<h2>A Closer Look at Future Cub Jefferson Rojas<\/h2>\n<p>Despite his young age, Rojas has been climbing the Cubs prospect chart from the moment he signed with the team.\u00a0 Most of his playing time in Myrtle Beach has been at shortstop.\u00a0 This is saying something, given that he has somewhat displaced another top prospect, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=hernan005cri,hernan002cri,hernan006cri,hernan003cri&amp;search=Cristian+Hern\u00e1ndez&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-03-18_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cristian Hernandez<\/a>, and forced him to second.\u00a0 Going into this season, Rojas has jumped into the top ten in the Cubs farm system.\u00a0 The Cubs knew they had someone special, signing Rojas for a $1 million bonus out of the Dominican Republic.\u00a0 He has impressed at every level so far and with age and development, the sky is the limit.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">&#8220;That&#8217;s the guy that I want to emulate. That&#8217;s the guy I want to look up to.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>No. 10 <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Cubs?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">#Cubs<\/a> prospect Jefferson Rojas looks to climb prospects lists while trying to be like this former Chicago SS: <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/kk9xIxmb6N\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">https:\/\/t.co\/kk9xIxmb6N<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/FS9r6U3ivj\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pic.twitter.com\/FS9r6U3ivj<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 MLB Pipeline (@MLBPipeline) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MLBPipeline\/status\/1768865097617695035?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">March 16, 2024<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>It shouldn\u2019t be surprising that Rojas chose shortstop.\u00a0 When interviewed, he speaks glowingly of former Cub <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/b\/baezja01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-03-18_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Javier B\u00e1ez<\/a> and the style he brought to the team.\u00a0 Rojas has often said that he has tried to emulate \u201cEl Mago.\u201d Despite his young age, Rojas still wishes to play alongside him someday.\u00a0 If his improvement continues, he may even exceed expectations and break into the major leagues sometime next season.\u00a0 In just 70 games with Myrtle Beach, Rojas flashed power and speed.\u00a0 His seven home runs, 14 doubles, 31 RBI, 48 runs scored, 73 total hits and 13 stolen bases could not be ignored.\u00a0 The plan is that Rojas will start the year in Myrtle Beach, but this may not be for long.<\/p>\n<h3>How Long Until He&#8217;s With the Cubs?<\/h3>\n<p>The Cubs have thought so highly of Rojas that he was to be featured in their Spring Breakout game. However, Mother Nature had other ideas. The game was rained out against the Chicago White Sox.
