{"id":68310,"date":"2024-03-15T07:00:25","date_gmt":"2024-03-15T11:00:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/?p=68310"},"modified":"2024-03-14T13:40:46","modified_gmt":"2024-03-14T17:40:46","slug":"drew-smyly-role-chicago-cubs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2024\/03\/15\/drew-smyly-role-chicago-cubs\/","title":{"rendered":"What Role Will Drew Smyly Have?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Every team hopes for flexibility on a roster.\u00a0 For position players, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2024\/02\/28\/bellinger-three-rookies-cubs\/\" target=\"_self\">Cody Bellinger<\/a> is the perfect example.\u00a0 He can play first base or center field.\u00a0 Michael Busch can play first base or third base.\u00a0 For a pitching staff, it is a luxury that you can have a player who can succeed as a starter and a reliever.\u00a0 Last year, Drew Smyly vacillated between starter and long bullpen reliever.\u00a0 So, with only a couple of weeks left in Spring Training, has his role been better defined yet?<\/p>\n<h2>What Role Will Drew Smyly Have?<\/h2>\n<h3>2023 Role<\/h3>\n<p>One of the famous baseball adages is that you can never have enough pitching.\u00a0 With the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bleachernation.com\/cubs\/2024\/03\/12\/jameson-taillon-trending-towards-opening-the-season-on-the-injured-list\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">early signs of injury<\/a> to projected starter Jameson Taillon, the Cubs are now looking for another option during the season&#8217;s first two weeks.\u00a0 Luckily for the Northsiders, the answer could be already on their roster.\u00a0 Although probably not penciled in as a starter when camp started, Smyly may be in line to start the year in the rotation.\u00a0 Results have yet to come back for Taillon\u2019s back woes, which have hounded him all Spring.<\/p>\n<p>Smyly had a promising start last season as a starter.\u00a0 The first half of 2023 saw Smyly in top form, going 5-1 and allowing more than two earned runs just once in ten starts through May 23.\u00a0 However, his record dipped to 2-6 in the subsequent nine starts, and his ERA ballooned from 2.60 to 4.41.<\/p>\n<p>Following his July 17 start, Smyly was moved to the bullpen and only came in four times the rest of the season as a starter.\u00a0 Although not perfect, Smyly did prove valuable, appearing 18 times and giving up only eight earned runs during those appearances, with half of those coming in his first relief stint.\u00a0 The troubling fact was that in those four spot starts, he gave up 22 runs in under 14 innings pitched in the 2<sup>nd<\/sup> half of the season.<\/p>\n<h3>Starter or Reliever?<\/h3>\n<p>When the Cubs are at full strength, the spotlight could shift to the promising arms ready to splash.\u00a0 Jordan Wicks, Javier Assad, and even Haden Wesneski might be given a chance before Smyly.\u00a0 This prospect of fresh talent stepping up to the plate brings an exciting future for the Cubs and their fans.
