{"id":67243,"date":"2024-02-25T10:54:33","date_gmt":"2024-02-25T15:54:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/?p=67243"},"modified":"2024-02-25T10:54:33","modified_gmt":"2024-02-25T15:54:33","slug":"cubs-bellinger-mlb","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2024\/02\/25\/cubs-bellinger-mlb\/","title":{"rendered":"Are the Cubs Not Done Shopping for Free Agents?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The biggest off-season question has been answered with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2024\/02\/25\/all-star-returning-to-chicago\/\" target=\"_self\">signing of Cody Bellinger<\/a> to a 3-year, $80 million contract.\u00a0 While this deal has advantages and disadvantages to it, one thing it does is ensure that the Cubs&#8217; most productive player last year will be back in the lineup.\u00a0 His .307 batting average and .881 OPS were enough to earn him a top-ten MVP slot.\u00a0 Furthermore, he was easily the most feared hitter in the Cubs lineup last season.<\/p>\n<p>Some may view the opt-outs after each season as a disadvantage, but it is a gamble the front office is willing to take.\u00a0 Even if Bellinger decides to opt-out after year one, the hope is that prospects such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/crowape01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-02-25_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pete Crow-Armstrong<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/b\/buschmi02.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-02-25_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Michael Busch<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/canaral01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-02-25_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alexander Canario<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/mervima01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-02-25_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Matt Mervis<\/a> will be ready to take the reins at a much cheaper price.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, the contract seems to be a real win\/win for both sides.\u00a0 Looking forward, now that Bellinger is back, are the Cubs still in play for the other three Boras clients that still have yet to sign?\u00a0 Which one is the most likely to sign with the Cubs?<\/p>\n<h3><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/snellbl01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-02-25_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Blake Snell<\/a><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The reigning <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/y\/youngcy01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-02-25_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cy Young<\/a><\/strong> Award winner has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcsportschicago.com\/mlb\/chicago-cubs\/cubs-rumors\/predicting-the-landing-spots-for-cody-bellinger-and-the-other-top-remaining-mlb-free-agents\/542346\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">rumored to be going to the Yankees<\/a>.\u00a0 However, it seems the market has not bore out the contract he has been looking for in his long-term future. Would Snell be interested in a deal similar to that of Bellinger\u2019s?\u00a0 It could make sense with multiple opt-outs or a very high annual average value on a shorter deal.\u00a0 If either of these are the case, Snell could very easily be a candidate for the Cubs.\u00a0 Jed Hoyer has a track record of not giving pitchers long-term deals.<\/p>\n<h3><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=montgjo01,montgo001jor&amp;search=Jordan+Montgomery&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-02-25_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jordan Montgomery<\/a><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Jordan Montgomery became a fantastic mid-season acquisition for the Rangers and propelled them to the World Series.\u00a0 His combined 4.2 WAR with St. Louis and Texas last year was fantastic, given the timing of his contract status.\u00a0 However, I suspect that teams are still not willing to give more than three years to the 31-year-old.\u00a0 Similar to Snell, the Cubs could go with a short-term, opt-out filled contract for just two years.<\/p>\n<p>From Montgomery\u2019s perspective, he may be viewing this as his last chance to get the \u201cbig\u201d contract.\u00a0 Having never made more than $10 million per year previously, this could be his chance to cash in.\u00a0 The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlb.com\/news\/jordan-montgomery-red-sox-free-agent-fit\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Red Sox have been rumored<\/a> to be in on his services, but he\u2019s still out there.<\/p>\n<h3><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/chapmma01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-02-25_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Matt Chapman<\/a><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The Cubs have been impressed with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2024\/02\/07\/cubs-prospects-spring-training\/\" target=\"_self\">development of Christopher Morel<\/a>.\u00a0 It certainly didn\u2019t hurt that he led off his spring training <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/game\/_\/gameId\/401576643\/white-sox-cubs\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">with a bomb<\/a>.\u00a0 Chicago may not want to stunt the further development of Morel or Busch so signing Chapman, now that they have Bellinger, may be a long shot.\u00a0 Like Montgomery, Chapman will be 31 in May so a long-term deal seems to be out of the question for the Northsiders.<\/p>\n<h3>Prediction<\/h3>\n<p>It would signal that Chicago means business this year and are trying to compete not only for a division title but a World Series.\u00a0 If the dollars and years can match up, I believe that Snell would be the most likely to sign with Chicago. The Cubs have a ton of young arms on the way.
