The Cubs are slated to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fangraphs.com\/depthcharts.aspx?position=Standings\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">finish second in the NL Central<\/a> this season, according to FanGraphs projections. FanGraphs has the Cubs finishing 81-81 in 2024, which would put them second in the NL Central. The St. Louis Cardinals are the one team above them, but their season projection gives them a record of 83-79. Chicago was also able to <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2024\/01\/09\/shota-imanaga-signs-cubs\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">snag one of the coveted Japanese pitchers<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=imanag000sho&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-02-12_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Shota Imanaga<\/a>. Their pitching staff has definitely gotten better, but there are some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlb.com\/news\/best-remaining-mlb-free-agents-2023-24\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">good free-agent pitchers<\/a> still at large.<\/p>\n<p>At the plate, the Cubs did not make any moves besides acquiring <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/b\/buschmi02.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-02-12_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Michael Busch<\/a> in the same trade as Almonte. Their lineup is still going to cause some problems for opposing teams, though. With <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/swansda01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-02-12_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dansby Swanson<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/h\/hoernni01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-02-12_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nico Hoerner<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/h\/happia01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-02-12_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ian Happ<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/morelch01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-02-12_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Christopher Morel<\/a>, and whoever ends up playing first base, the Cubs should have a good season batting-wise. There are still some moves to be made, but the Cubs are confident in who they have.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Is the FanGraphs Projection Realistic?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>For the 2023 season, FanGraphs had the Cubs finishing third in the NL Central with around 77 wins. Chicago ended up finishing second with a record of 83-79, and just missing the playoffs. It is hard for projections to get anything spot on, but FanGraphs was pretty close in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>For 2024, the Cubs lost <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/stromma01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-02-12_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Marcus Stroman<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/b\/bellico01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-02-12_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cody Bellinger<\/a>, so that was a little bit of a hit. However, as mentioned, the Cubs made some moves, and they hired a new manager in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/managers\/counscr01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Craig Counsell<\/a>. With these additions, their losses should not outweigh their gains.
