The team filled another coaching position that opened up as a result of their managerial hire. On Wednesday, the Brewers officially promoted bench coach Pat Murphy to manager. Murphy has been the Brewers bench coach since 2016. In 2015, he served as the interim manager for the San Diego Padres after they fired Bud Black and had a 42-54 record. This is no surprise since Murphy was the favorite to get the job from the moment Counsell left. Prior to his managerial stint in San Diego, Murphy coached some of the team’s minor league affiliates. Furthermore, Murphy coached Counsell while he was in college at Notre Dame. Besides being the head baseball coach at Notre Dame from 1988 to 1994, Murphy was also the head coach at Arizona State from 1995 to 2009. As a college head coach, Murphy compiled a 947-400-2 record. As a player, Murphy pitched in the minor leagues with the Padres organization and the San Francisco Giants organization.

Meanwhile, Weeks, who has been a player development assistant for the Brewers for the past two seasons, fills Murphy’s old role. In his playing career, Weeks spent 11 seasons with the Brewers. Weeks is also a part of the Brewers Wall of Honor for his contributions to the team as a player. This will be the first time since 1998 that the Brewers have not had an official bench coach on their coaching staff. The rest of the Brewers coaching staff will remain the same heading into the 2024 season. This will allow for continuity with the coaching staff even as the Brewers have a new manager in Murphy, who will be getting his first chance to be a manager in the majors on a full-time basis.

Photo Credit: © Mark Hoffman / Milwaukee Journal Sentinel / USA TODAY NETWORK

The Milwaukee Brewers are set to make multiple coaching hires, including their open managerial position.
