The Fireflies are the New York Mets Single-A team. <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=tebow-000tim&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tim Tebow<\/a><\/strong> plays for the Fireflies, and his presence to a sellout. Seven thousand people were at this game, most to see Tebow. The crowd regularly cheered when Tebow took the batter&#8217;s box. However he went hitless on the day, and struck out five times. The Legends and the Fireflies each won one of the games of the double-header, so no changes occurred in the South Atlantic League Southern Division standings.<\/p>\n<p>When I got home from the game, I was inspired to write the following poem, a la that great 1880&#8217;s ballplayer, Casey at the Bat.<\/p>\n<h2>Tebow at the Bat<\/h2>\n<p><em>The weather was horrid, for the fans that Saturday;<\/em><br \/>\n<em> the rain fell hard against the tarp, the players could nae play;<\/em><br \/>\n<em> And when the announcer&#8217;s voice rang out, crowd it grew still;<\/em><br \/>\n<em> the game postponed, to-morrow would be, a traditional double bill.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The Legends fans slept dry and well that night, ready to play two<\/em><br \/>\n<em> But the Fireflies from Columbia&#8217;s fans had much more a to-do,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> They&#8217;d come to see a hero play, whom the pigskin had made fat,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> They wanted Columbia to take the field to witness Tebow\u00a0at the bat.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Three home runs thus far this year, had Tebow sent right out,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> The Legends pitchers were not worried, Tebow had no clout;<\/em><br \/>\n<em> His average was but two-twenty, and though powerful his cut;<\/em><br \/>\n<em> His timing and his eye made him look to take the butt.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>In the top of the third early, his number came to peek &#8211;<\/em><br \/>\n<em> And the women who loved the man cried a throaty shriek,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> But he didn&#8217;t swing at all, the ball cut across his knees,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> He glared at the umpire when he bellowed &#8220;Strike three!&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>In the fourth of the early game, he came to bat once more,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> With two outs, and Jabs on second, a hit would surely score,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Tebow, he made contact sure, and his fans gasped all together,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> But you could hear a pin drop, when the ball found Gasparini&#8217;s leather.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>A crescendo filled Whitaker Field, and Wynne, he lets it go,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> And the very air around the plate was shattered by Tebow&#8217;s blow.<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Carpio starts to run for second but then he takes a knee,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> As the sixth is ended when the ump yells &#8220;STRIKE THREE.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The second game, he&#8217;ll do it, theses visitor&#8217;s fans did say,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> No one could believe their hero could go &#8216;O for the day,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> He saw the plate in the second and the fourth, but brother,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> I tell you now, as I was there, his bat never left his shoulder.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>One last time he saw the box, to stance he took his tool,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> The final inning of the games, or else he&#8217;d look the fool.<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Davis gripped the white leather bean, and avoided Tebow&#8217;s eye,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> For <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=davis-000byr&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Andre Davis<\/a><\/strong> knew the well of hits had run dry.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>In Lexington that evening, baseball fans gave cheer,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Their boys had won a close one, so they raised up all the beer,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> To the fine pitching youngsters of their Single-A side,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Who had kept Tebow off the bases -struck out times five.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Main Photo:<\/p>\n<div class=\"getty embed image\" style=\"background-color: #fff; display: inline-block; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue',Helvetica,Arial,sans-serif; color: #a7a7a7; font-size: 11px; width: 100%; max-width: 594px;\">\n<div style=\"padding: 0; margin: 0; text-align: left;\"><a style=\"color: #a7a7a7; text-decoration: none; font-weight: normal !important; border: none; display: inline-block;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gettyimages.com\/detail\/683748342\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Embed from Getty Images<\/a><\/div>\n<div style=\"overflow: hidden; position: relative; height: 0; padding: 78.956229% 0 0 0; width: 100%;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"display: inline-block; position: absolute; top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%; margin: 0;\" src=\"\/\/embed.gettyimages.com\/embed\/683748342?et=4lHWXtwOR6xQyseyNKFg4w&amp;tld=com&amp;viewMoreLink=off&amp;sig=gnU50ZG80Qb0M5RpOJ55_QnFQ3XzAXB-RE5AXp8VPrM=&amp;caption=true\" width=\"594\" height=\"469\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p style=\"margin: 0;\">\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On May 28, 2017, the Lexington Legends hosted the Columbia Fireflies in a traditional double-header, scheduled for two seven-inning games.
