The news of his signing was confirmed on Tuesday morning by Jon Morosi of MLB.com. Perez accepted the Rangers’ qualifying offer of one year, and $19.65 million. In the closing months of the 2022 season, Perez made it publicly clear that he had a desire to say in Texas. Both sides were able to make that happen for the 2023 season. The 2024 season is a different story, however. In a perfect world, Perez would have preferred a multi-year deal. The Rangers had other ideas. It seems that they are taking things a step at a time by signing the 31-year old lefty to a short-term contract for now. If Perez and the Rangers see eye-to-eye on a multi-year pact at the end of next season, they’ll talk. It all depends on if Perez produces or not.

Martin Perez’ 2022 Season

Martin Perez quickly established himself as the Rangers’ ace in 2022. The lefty signed a one-year deal last winter for $4.5 million. He became the team’s stopper as a number of his wins in a Rangers uniform stopped a losing streak that they had been on at the time. Perez finished the season with a record of 12–8, with an earned run average of 2.89. For much of the year, he led the AL in ERA, as it never went above 3.00. Fans enjoyed Perez’ resurgence in 2022. During his first stint in Texas beginning in 2013, Martin Pérez posted a 4.63 ERA with a 1.48 WHIP as he struggled through the back end of his seven-year tenure.

Following the 2018 season, Pérez went on to spend a year with the Twins, and two with the Red Sox. He struggled to a 4.88 ERA over those three years. When the season starts in 2023, Martin Perez will be slotted into a Rangers starting rotation that includes Jon Gray, Dane Dunning, Glenn Otto, and the recently acquired Jake Odorizzi.

Other News

The Rangers announced they’ve traded reliever Dennis Santana to the Atlanta Braves in exchange for cash considerations. Atlanta designated Jackson Stephens for assignment in a corresponding 40-man roster move.

Main Photo:
Embed from Getty Images

Players Mentioned:

Martin Perez, Jon Gray, Dane Dunning, Glenn Otto, Jake Odorizzi, Dennis Santana, Jackson Stephens

Free agent left-hander Martin Perez has re-signed with the Texas Rangers.
